MLB star eats 900 raw eggs to get better at pitching – and it actually worked

To gain an edge in professional sports, some athletes push themselves to incredible limits. For example, baseball player Ryan Lambert once ate 900 raw eggs in a single month, believing it would boost his performance.

Working hard and having a strong desire to win aren’t always enough to succeed in sports. Sometimes, athletes need extra help with their diet, even if that means consuming things that don’t taste great.

All the hard work paid off for Ryan Lambert, who went from being cut from his college team to being drafted by the Mets.

Ryan Lambert’s unusual diet helped him get drafted by the Mets

Two years ago, Lambert wasn’t considered skilled enough to play baseball for Missouri State University. After being cut from the team, he worked hard and made significant changes to improve his game and get ahead.

Ryan Lambert tried a bizarre method to improve his pitching speed: he consumed almost 1,000 raw eggs in just one month. This unique Mets prospect can throw over 100 mph and isn’t afraid to eat chicken hearts, making him one of the most unusual players at spring training.

MLB reporter Anthony DiComo shared that pitcher Jacob Lambert ate 30 raw eggs daily – a whopping 900 a month – hoping to throw faster. Surprisingly, the unusual diet actually helped him achieve that goal.

While practicing, Lambert threw a pitch reaching 99mph and shared a video on Twitter (now X). This caught the eye of scouts from the Oklahoma Sooners. Later, he was drafted by the Mets and has been steadily improving his skills ever since.

I was so excited to see him hit 100.9 mph with his fastball! While his overall stats aren’t amazing yet, everyone still agrees he’s one of the most promising young relief pitchers out there. He actually thinks he can even push it to 102 mph if he keeps practicing, which is awesome!

Lambert explained his decision to quickly drink several raw eggs, saying the first day was definitely difficult. However, he added that he welcomes a challenge and isn’t afraid of a little hardship – it actually motivates him.

And when it comes to what he eats, Lambert’s unusual diet once included a bowl of chicken hearts. Thankfully, he’s now cut back on eggs, eating about 10 a day.

Aroldis Chapman’s record pitch is still intact after 15 years

Even hitting 100.9 mph, that pitch doesn’t quite rank among the fastest in baseball history. Aroldis Chapman, who used to pitch for the Red Sox, consistently tops the charts for pitching speed.

He currently owns the two fastest recorded pitches: 105.8 mph in 2010 and 105.7 mph in 2016. Recently, Ben Joyce of the Los Angeles Angels came close to these records with a 105.5 mph pitch in 2024.

The rest of the top ten fastest pitches all came from Chapman, several reaching 105.1 and exactly 105 mph. It appears Ryan Lambert will need to increase his training intensity to improve his performance.
