As a long-time gamer and follower of tech influencers, I can’t help but feel dismayed by the actions of these “scummy” companies that are using AI to mimic the voices of popular personalities like MKBHD. It’s not just unfair; it’s downright unethical.
As a devoted follower, I’m speaking up like MKBHD himself when he recently took a stand against a shady firm that manipulatively employed an AI replica of his voice for promotional purposes on various social media platforms.
With the advent of advanced AI technology in 2022, there’s been a growing trend among businesses leveraging this innovation for producing videos, music, and other multimedia content.
AI-voice mimicking tools are frequently employed in social media platforms, sometimes imitating well-known personalities such as influencers or celebrities. A notable case is that of the late comedian Robin Williams, whose daughter criticized the technology following a video of his voice becoming viral after his passing.
2024, October 14th, saw Tech YouTube personality, Marques ‘MKBHD’ Brownlee, express his discontent towards a questionable and secretive firm on Instagram. The reason? They had been utilizing an artificial imitation of his voice.
It’s becoming a reality. There are actual businesses planning to utilize an AI-generated imitation of my voice for their advertisements,” he stated on platform X.
There are no real consequences, only the reputation of being a questionable business that’s not above going to great lengths to sell their products.
It’s happening. There are real companies who will just use an AI-created rip of my voice to promote their stuff. And there’s really no repercussions for it other than being known as this scummy shady company that is willing to stoop that low to sell some product

Although not every social media site has established mechanisms for reporting AI-generated voice duplicates, YouTube implemented new guidelines as early as July, allowing users to do exactly that.
According to our policy, if artificial intelligence is employed to modify or fabricate content that mimics your appearance or voice, you can request its deletion. For the content to be taken down, it must show a lifelike imitation of you.
On previous occasions, MKBHD has expressed disapproval when a company used his image for their AI product without obtaining his consent.
In February, Cody Ko found out about an AI chatbot allegedly allowing conversations with popular YouTubers, including himself, Cody Ko, FaZe Rug, among others, using their names and images.
“There’s a random AI company parading around an AI chatbot to ‘chat with a YouTuber’ and it’s so incredibly bad. Just spews lies. They also never got permission to use my likeness, and I suspect several others on this list were never even asked. Avoid this TRASH,” he said.
