MK2 Films Hires Former Protagonist MD Vanessa Saal to Advise and Scale Up Acquisitions, Co-Productions, Launch U.K. Presence (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned film industry insider with a penchant for discovering and championing groundbreaking cinema, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Vanessa Saal‘s new role at MK2 Films! With her impressive track record of success, from collaborating with some of the most renowned names in the business to her tenure at esteemed companies like Protagonist Pictures and Upgrade Productions, it’s clear that she’s the perfect fit to help MK2 scale new heights.

MK2 Films has brought on Vanessa Saal, a previous managing director at Protagonist Pictures, as their executive consultant and U.K. point person. This strategic hiring highlights the company’s intentions to expand co-productions and acquisitions, particularly those involving English-language projects.

Situated in London, Saal will collaborate with the company’s joint CEO, Nathanael Karmitz, and managing director, Fionnuala Jamison.

This year, Saal began working with MK2 Films on a freelance basis and played a significant role in their most ambitious film lineup yet at Cannes. This collection featured “Belly of the Beast,” directed by Andrew Haigh and starring Ben Stiller and Colin Farrell, as well as “Alpha Gang” featuring Cate Blanchett, “Late Fame” by Kent Jones with Willem Dafoe, Sandra Hüller, and Samy Burch. Moving forward, Saal will continue in this role while also offering strategic advice, expanding co-production activities, and establishing a U.K. presence for the Paris-based company.

“Saal, the former executive vice president of production and distribution at Upgrade Productions and previous head of sales and distribution for Protagonist Pictures, expressed his admiration for MK2 Films. He feels privileged to contribute to its exciting future, stating that it stands for something truly esteemed.”

“Throughout my career, I’ve had the good fortune of working for companies during their growth periods, and I can’t wait to contribute to MK2 as they move forward. This is an exceptional team, and they produce exceptional films,” Saal went on to say.

Saal started working at Protagonist in 2014 as the head of global sales. Before this, she held positions such as SVP of international sales at Studiocanal in Paris and a co-founder at Kinology based in Paris. Her professional journey began at Focus Features International in New York, where she earned her degree from Brown University. Throughout her career, she has been involved in critically acclaimed and commercially successful films like Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Cold War,” where she first teamed up with MK2, Taika Waititi’s “Hunt for the Wilder People,” Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Lobster,” Tomas Alfredson’s “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” the Coen brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis,” Jaume Collet-Serra’s global box office hit “Non-Stop,” and David Heyman-produced “Paddington.”

In the meantime, MK2 Films has been flourishing with several acclaimed and financially successful films, including “Anatomy of a Fall,” which won an Oscar for Justine Triet, as well as Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World,” Celine Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” “Corsage” and “Cold War,” to name a few.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to follow the progress of three exciting productions: “Sentimental Value” by Trier, “The Secret Agent” by Kleber Mendonça Filho, and “The Thing With Feathers” directed by Dylan Southern, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch.

“MK2 Films expressed their excitement in stating that Vanessa’s exceptional understanding of cinema, sharp film sensibilities, and deep industry knowledge align perfectly with their future goals regarding sales, acquisitions, and production. They are delighted to have her join them for a lasting collaboration and eagerly anticipate the innovative projects they will develop together,” said MK2 Films.

MK2, a company that manages an art-house cinema chain in France and Spain, is currently headed by Nathanaël and Elisha Karmitz, who took over from their father Marin in 2005.
