Miyazaki Hayao’s Studio Ghibli, MM2 Ink Southeast Asia Distribution Deal

As someone who grew up in Southeast Asia, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia and excitement upon hearing about mm2 Entertainment’s partnership with Studio Ghibli. The thought of revisiting these enchanting tales on the big screen again is almost too good to be true!

The Asian media and amusement firm, mm2 Entertainment, has locked in a five-year deal for distributing movies with Studio Ghibli, the celebrated Japanese animation house founded by Miyazaki Hayao. This partnership will reintroduce the award-winning films of Studio Ghibli to moviegoers in Southeast Asia’s cinemas once more.

The agreement covers a total of 21 Studio Ghibli movies, such as “Spirited Away,” “Howl’s Moving Castle,” and “My Neighbour Totoro” by Miyazaki. mm2 plans to reintroduce these cherished films in Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, and Cambodia.

Under the current arrangement, the parent company mm2 Asia manages cinemas in Singapore and Malaysia, thereby offering a straightforward connection to film enthusiasts. This partnership is set to launch the initial Studio Ghibli films by the end of the year.

Studio Ghibli has just been awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Furthermore, an exhibition titled “The World of Studio Ghibli” is about to open at Singapore’s ArtScience Museum.

Following Studio Ghibli’s successful late-entry releases in China, Southeast Asia has now seen their premieres. “My Neighbor Totoro” hit the Chinese screens in 2018, a full 30 years after its Japanese debut, while “Ponyo” followed suit in 2020, 12 years post-release. In 2019, “Spirited Away” finally made it to China, outperforming the newly released “Toy Story 4” during its opening weekend. More recently, “The Boy and the Heron” saw China as its largest box office market.

Chang Long Jong, CEO of mm2 Asia, stated: “The films from Studio Ghibli are globally recognized for their artistic finesse, captivating storytelling, and deep emotional impact. Through this partnership, we can now share these cherished masterpieces with Southeast Asian viewers, allowing them to experience the magic on the big screen as originally intended. We’re excited about this collaboration, as it will introduce a fresh audience to the enchanting world of Studio Ghibli.

Junichi Nishioka, Vice President of PR, curation, and archive, as well as international distribution at Studio Ghibli, noted: “A significant number of visitors from Southeast Asia frequent the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka and Ghibli Park daily. Lately, Hayao Miyazaki has been honored with the esteemed Magsaysay Award. It’s heartening to see that our films are now being appreciated by a far greater Asian audience than previously. I am thrilled that this recognition will pave the way for even wider dissemination of our productions, and for those yet-to-be-born children in the future.
