⚠️ WARNING: This write-up unveils crucial plot points from the currently screening movie “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
Could it be that “The Final Reckoning” is indeed Tom Cruise’s last outing as Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise? As fans, we’ve been led to believe that this could be the swan song for our beloved IMF agent, with no definite plans for future installments announced yet. Will Ethan triumph over the AI Entity without a scratch, or will he face a tragic end in this thrilling conclusion?
In the movie’s conclusion, it’s not a shock that Ethan manages to prevent impending doom for the world once more, with him and most of his team making it out unscathed onto the streets of London. Unfortunately, Ving Rhames’ character Luther Stickell, makes the ultimate sacrifice by disarming a nuclear bomb placed in London by the villain Gabriel (Esai Morales). However, before he dies, Luther constructs a lethal weapon called a “poison pill” data drive, which is later stolen by Gabriel.
Following the retrieval of a crucial software component (resembling the Rabbit’s Foot from “Mission: Impossible III”) from an abandoned Sevastopol submarine, Ethan must obtain the deadly ‘poison pill’ from Gabriel in a high-stakes gunfight within a South African digital bunker. However, events seldom run smoothly, as Gabriel triggers a nuclear explosion with a 20-minute countdown before fleeing in a biplane. In an attempt to thwart this catastrophe, Benji (Simon Pegg), Grace (Hayley Atwell), Paris (Pom Klementieff), Degas (Greg “Tarzan” Davis), William Donloe (Rolf Saxon) and his wife Tapeesa (Lucy Tulugarjuk) work tirelessly to disarm the bomb. Amid this chaos, Ethan seizes control of a plane and boards Gabriel’s. Eventually, he regains possession of the poison pill and merges it with the software component. Unfortunately, Gabriel meets his end after deploying his parachute and sustaining a fatal head injury from the rudder upon impact.
During the most tense 100 milliseconds ever recorded in “Mission: Impossible,” it falls upon Grace to let the Entity infiltrate the destructive device, quickly disconnect it from the bunker before it takes over global nuclear weapons, all while Benji agonizingly guides her through this process as he performs an improvised emergency operation, miles away in Paris. In a heartbeat, Grace activates the switch, imprisoning the Entity within the destructive device, thus averting disaster.
The film concludes with Ethan, Grace, Benji, and their group parting ways in London, having securely locked the Entity within Ethan’s poison pill drive. As for Tom Cruise, he might temporarily bid farewell to Ethan as his next project, an unnamed comedy directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu from “The Revenant,” is scheduled for release on October 2, 2026. Additionally, Cruise has a space-themed movie in the pipeline with director Doug Liman, where he will make history as the first actor to perform a spacewalk and film beyond Earth’s orbit.
