Over the weekend, South Korean viewers showed their support for domestic productions as “Hi-Five” took the top spot, just edging out the current Hollywood blockbuster in ticket sales.
In its initial run, the new movie raked in approximately $2.6 million from 380,334 ticket sales at 1,211 different locations, which represented 32.36% of the overall nationwide box office earnings as reported by Kobis, a service run by the Korean Film Council. Directed by Kang Hyoung-chul, this film tells a story about five regular individuals who acquire extraordinary abilities following organ transplants and subsequently unite to combat a psychic with a desire for their newfound powers.
Following closely behind in the second spot was “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” earning an additional $2.67 million from 370,876 spectators, capturing a 33.18% share of the weekend’s sales. Although it surpassed “Hi-Five” slightly in terms of ticket sales at the box office, it was placed second due to fewer admissions. The action-packed movie starring Tom Cruise is still going strong, having made a total of $17.7 million from over 2.47 million spectators since its release on May 17.
In third place at local cinemas, the new film titled “Big Deal,” earned $932,024 and welcomed 131,626 viewers across 1,040 screens. This ensemble drama is the work of director Choi Yun-jin, who presents a tense clash between Korea’s leading soju manufacturer, on the brink of collapse, and a global investor intent on acquiring the company.
Over the weekend, Disney’s live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch” maintained its fourth position at the box office, earning $645,367. This brings its total earnings to an impressive $2.2 million and approximately 321,770 ticket sales since it was released on May 21st.

Meanwhile, the sixth place was taken by another Japanese animation titled “Colorful Stage!
