‘Mission: Impossible’ Helmer Christopher McQuarrie, ‘Mad Max 2’ Headline BFI, London Action Festival Partnership (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile who cherishes every moment spent immersed in the world of films, I am absolutely thrilled by the upcoming events at the BFI Southbank as part of the “Art of Action” season. The lineup, featuring luminaries like Christopher McQuarrie and George Miller, promises an unparalleled insight into the artistry and craft behind some of the most iconic action films in cinema history.

This autumn, the BFI Southbank will collaborate with the London Action Festival for a lineup of activities, which is part of their “Art of Action” series, happening from October 21st to November 30th.

On November 8th, the director of the “Mission: Impossible” films, Christopher McQuarrie (of “Rogue Nation,” “Fallout,” and upcoming “Dead Reckoning”), along with editor Eddie Hamilton who has worked on these movies, will attend a screening of John Frankenheimer’s 1964 film “The Train.” They will share insights about the impact this influential movie has had on their own work.

George Miller’s “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” has been chosen for a special screening event at the festival titled “The World’s Greatest Screening Ever (Maybe!)”. This iconic post-apocalyptic film from 1982 will be presented with a unique addition – words straight from George Miller himself. Additionally, Iain Smith, the producer of “Mad Max: Fury Road”, will attend in person to share his experiences collaborating with Miller and his contributions to the franchise’s revival. He will discuss these topics during the event.

The London Action Festival’s past showings have featured packed events such as the screenings of “Die Hard” in 2022, where director John McTiernan put an end to the argument about whether his movie is a Christmas film (it indeed is), and “The Italian Job” in 2023, during which spectators dressed up in English soccer gear while a jazz quartet played “The Self-Preservation Society.

On November 16th, the British Stunt Register will seize control of BFI Southbank, offering a variety of displays, discussions, debates, and workshops that highlight the progression of their skillset throughout the organization’s half-century journey.

According to Julian Alcantara, co-founder of the London Action Festival, Christopher McQuarrie and Eddie Hamilton are not only exceptional filmmakers but also show a great deal of passion and eloquence when it comes to the topic of cinema.

My fellow co-founder, Ron Fogelman, remarks that “Mad Max 2” is not just a movie, but a significant milestone in cinema history – an exhilarating, heart-pounding spectacle when viewed on the big screen. He further explains that our festival strives to offer more than just film screenings; it aims to generate a strong, shared experience among viewers, going beyond the mere act of watching movies.

The “Art of Action” series, financed by the British Film Institute’s Film Audience Network with funds from the National Lottery, honors exceptional action choreography across the span of cinematic history.
