Mission Impossible 8 looks like it’s going to do what James Bond never could

As a longtime fan who has seen more than his fair share of action movies, I must say that the upcoming Mission Impossible 8: The Final Reckoning trailer has truly piqued my interest. While some may argue that nothing ever really dies in Hollywood, it seems that Ethan Hunt might just be the one to buck the trend and bring this iconic series to a satisfying close.

At last, the thrilling preview for Mission Impossible 8: The Last Standoff has surfaced, hinting that Ethan Hunt may accomplish a feat James Bond never did – bring things to a halt.

Today, it seems as though even the concept of tomorrow fading away isn’t unique – it appears movie franchises share this trait too. A frequent complaint about contemporary films is that nobody seems to have the authority to end a series, making them persist indefinitely, much like diamonds, which are forever.

It appears that Mission: Impossible 8, the upcoming action film by renowned action star Tom Cruise, might break tradition by concluding the story of Ethan Hunt in a fitting manner, as suggested by Ethan asking his team to trust him one “last” time.

This unexpected decision could rattle quite a few people, but it may ultimately work out, as evident by a series that has no room left to expire – I’m referring to none other than the iconic character, James Bond himself.

The name’s Bond…

In essence, the characters in Bond films and Mission Impossible share similar themes. They’re both about unconventional agents engaging in risky activities to prevent global disasters from megalomaniacs and other villains who aim to bring about calamities like the collapse of the sky or massive catastrophes.

To put it straight from my perspective as a fan, I’d have to say that I lean towards Mission Impossible being the superior series. The reason? Simply put, while Bond is undeniably an iconic figure, his fame sometimes eclipses the movies themselves, creating a whirlwind of tabloid frenzy that can overshadow the excitement for a new 007 installment. On the other hand, Mission Impossible films manage to stand on their own merit without being overshadowed by external hype.

When I initially watched the last Daniel Craig film as a die-hard fan, I didn’t feel much emotional resonance at his apparent demise. Deep down, I was aware that it wasn’t truly an end for him and that there would be more James Bond adventures ahead.

Essentially, I believed he’d survive for another day since he was such an important character that it seemed impossible for his storyline to conclude permanently. It felt as if as soon as the credits finished, the media started speculating about who would replace the current actor in the role of a secret agent serving Her Majesty.

…James Bond

Mission Impossible 8 looks like it’s going to do what James Bond never could

Frankly, it’s draining, and it tends to disrupt my immersion in the movie, reducing its tension or emotional resonance. However, unlike the Bond films, which hold a significant cultural influence, the Mission: Impossible series isn’t expected to continue indefinitely. They possess the advantage of being able to conclude, a power greater than any weapon Dr. No could wield.

This upcoming movie creates a sense of real tension, making viewers feel uncertain about what might happen. Whether Ethan lives or dies is unpredictable. This uncertainty keeps me invested because I’m not yet speculating about who will replace Ethan Hunt in the next Mission Impossible film, as there are no such rumors or discussions 12 months prior to the release of Mission Impossible 8.

Mission Impossible has a clear countdown (or deadline), which creates an exciting tension. On the other hand, with Bond movies, we know that character will keep on having adventures, essentially forever.

It’s possible that these continued Mission Impossible films are just strategic promotions, but I can’t help but hope that Tom Cruise understands the unique chance he’s been given in this situation. I may be idealistic, but let’s not rule out anything yet… especially not a change of heart!
