Mission: Impossible 8 Director Blasts Fan Service Calling It “Poison” That Ruins Movies

Those who are fond of the “film series” that debuted with its first movie in 1996, probably won’t expect much nostalgia from past films. The eighth part of the exciting spy adventure series, titled “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” will be released on May 23rd and stars Tom Cruise as the action protagonist, Ethan Hunt.

The interview from 2023, where the director was discussing the promotion of his previous film “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” has come back into focus. In this conversation, he shared some thoughts about fan service.

During the interview, he openly expressed his opinions on movie scripts containing elements aimed at pleasing fans (fan service). This term encompasses writers incorporating nods or references to past works that fans might appreciate, regardless of whether these elements are necessary for the storyline.

McQuarrie: Fan Service is “Deadly”

McQuarrie expressed in the interview that fan service and fandom can be harmful when overused. He likened it to a potent spice that should be used sparingly, not as the main ingredient. If you’ve seen previous movies, that’s fine, but he doesn’t rely on it because calling back to old narratives can distract from the current one, asking viewers to remember multiple stories instead of focusing on the present.

For McQuarrie, fan service can divert “valuable focus” from the ongoing story in the current film. “Either way, if you’re familiar with the (previous) movies, you’ve stepped out of the narrative, and I must redirect your attention back while I’m attempting to engross you in a tale so that it feels like the story is unfolding naturally around you,” McQuarrie explained. “Or you haven’t watched the other movie, and you become aware that everyone else in the theater knows something you don’t. In either case, you’ve disrupted the narrative flow and interrupted the continuity,” he concluded.

The Success of McQuarrie’s Top Gun Sequel Wasn’t Contingent on Fan Service

As a cinephile, I’d like to highlight that the director pointed out a film, not relying on fan service for its triumph. In collaboration with Eric Singer and Ehren Kruger, McQuarrie penned the script for this movie. This masterpiece, a follow-up to the iconic “Top Gun,” featured Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, and others. The film’s box office earnings surpassed expectations.

As a fellow enthusiast, McQuarrie shared his thoughts on the Top Gun sequel, emphasizing that it’s designed to be enjoyed even if you haven’t seen the original. He explained that Maverick’s story, much like the first film, pulls you in effortlessly and allows you to immerse yourself in the narrative without needing to ponder over the details as they are minimal. However, he doesn’t want you to stop thinking altogether; instead, he hopes you’ll contemplate the movie long after it ends.

The newest “Mission: Impossible” film made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival not long ago, where it was warmly embraced, even receiving a five-minute standing ovation from the attendees. It’s said that this Tom Cruise-fronted production had an estimated budget of over $400 million. Joining Cruise in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” are Esai Morales, Simon Pegg, Tramell Tillman, Hannah Waddingham, Hayley Atwell, and Ving Rhames. The movie will be released in theaters on May 23rd.
