Jeremey Zag’s self-governing animation studio, Miraculous’s co-creator and producer, known as Zag, is expanding its operations to Japan and has selected Kanji Kazahaya, a previous head at Toei Animation, as the COO of this new venture.
Speaking about his passion for Japanese culture and its influence on animation, Zag expressed excitement about the debut of Zag Japan, stating that it would offer an opportunity to delve into the emotional resonance and artistic elegance found in Japanese storytelling through the creation of manga, anime series, and traditional animated films.
We deeply cherish Japanese culture, and it’s an honor for us to collaborate now with the exceptional artists whose work has ignited dreams in countless individuals across the globe,” Zag expressed.
Kazahaya, who boasts 15 years of executive leadership at Toei Animation and now works with Zag Japan, stated that Zag has been incorporating the core elements of Japanese manga and anime, specifically the resilience of their main characters, into their content. By doing so, they have added a distinctive emotional richness to their storytelling.
Kanji Kazahaya commented that the extraordinary global success of ‘Miraculous’ demonstrates the vast potential in combining Western animation styles with the essence of Japanese manga and anime. He also mentioned that his role at Zag Japan would involve further integrating these two cultures and traditions.
Zag Japan has secured key collaborators and is now embarking on a partnership with Highway Star, a prominent Japanese talent agency. Notably, Hironobu Kageyama, best known as the singer of Dragon Ball, will lend his voice to projects produced by Zag.
Zag shared that music lies at the core of storytelling for them, and Japanese tunes have played a significant role in shaping their tales,” he said. “Starting this initial partnership with Hironobu Kageyama and numerous other legendary franchises from our youth feels like an incredibly poignant emblem.
Kiyoko Matsumura, head of Highway Star, stated that their company has a rich background of contributing to numerous renowned anime productions in Japan, and added that two of their elite artists, Hironobu Kageyama and Nami Tamaki, will be performing at Zag.
