As a dedicated reader and follower of media and politics, I am thrilled about the upcoming session at Mipcom Cannes focusing on “Apprentice in Wonderland.” Ramin Setoodeh’s insightful work has always been a go-to for me when it comes to understanding the intricate relationships between entertainment and political landscapes.
As we approach the upcoming U.S. presidential election, I’ll be focusing on the New York Times bestselling book “Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Guided America Through the Looking Glass,” which will undoubtedly shine a light on this captivating story at Mipcom Cannes.
This book, penned by Ramin Setoodeh – a co-editor-in-chief with EbMaster – delves into the significant part that the reality show The Apprentice played in propelling Donald Trump onto the political stage and its influence on contemporary culture.
On October 23rd, Setoodeh will lead a discussion at the Grand Auditorium within the Palais des Festivals. In this session, Setoodeh, who has conducted six in-depth interviews with Trump, will delve into how the culture of celebrity and the surge of reality TV in the early 1990s propelled Trump towards the White House, ultimately resulting in one of the most influential and commercially successful U.S. television series ever made.
Setoodeh will also unveil exclusive insights into the making of the NBC series, drawing from his on-camera interviews with the ex-President himself. Based in New York, this journalist will discuss the valuable lessons he gleaned from speaking to over fifty pivotal figures involved in The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice shows, such as network heads Jeff Zucker and Mark Burnett, Trump family members, production staff, advisors, and contestants.
Lucy Smith, director of Mipcom Cannes and Mip London, stated, “This instance represents a remarkable intersection of politics and entertainment that resonates strongly today.” She went on to explain, “Understanding the context, discussions, and sometimes contentious events that shaped a well-known political figure’s image, who managed a successful U.S. presidential campaign, and might do so again, while also establishing a globally popular and long-lasting format is both captivating and relevant.”
“Setoodeh’s second book, titled ‘Apprentice In Wonderland’, comes after the 2019 New York Times bestseller ‘Ladies Who Punch: The Behind-the-Scenes Account of The View’. The previous work delves into the tumultuous history of the groundbreaking morning talk show ‘The View’, a cultural phenomenon in U.S. television, through exclusive access to former hosts and key personnel.”
The upcoming 40th Mipcom event in Cannes is scheduled for October 21st to the 24th, with over 300 exhibitors having already signed up for participation.
