Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals Update Is A Massive Step Forward For The 14-Year-Old Game

For approximately five years now, Mojang, the developers of Minecraft, have incorporated RTX support. This enabled creators, modders, and others to transform their blocky worlds into visually breathtaking landscapes. Yet, during this period, there appears to be minimal progress made on officially developed visual enhancements. However, Mojang has recently unveiled a significant step forward with the announcement of the Vibrant Visuals update.

As a dedicated Minecraft fan, I recently had the privilege of stepping foot into Mojang’s Swedish studio to get a sneak peek at the upcoming update. Let me tell you, the Vibrant Visuals overhaul is set to revolutionize this 14-year-old game in ways we never imagined.

But here’s the kicker – it’s not just for tech-savvy PC gamers with ray tracing capabilities. When Vibrant Visuals rolls out for Minecraft Bedrock, it will also be accessible on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and select iOS and Android devices.

And for those of us who prefer the Java Edition, rest assured that Vibrant Visuals is being developed with us in mind too!

This change has been in development for quite some time now. According to Minecraft executive producer Ingela Garneji, speaking to a select group of media representatives, “It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. We’ve been refining and educating ourselves, making mistakes and then quickly learning from them, and collaboratively enhancing things with our community.

Although Mojang hasn’t shied away from graphical mishaps in the past, as Maddie Psenka, senior product manager at Vibrant Visuals, stated, “We’ve learned a lot from those mistakes. This time, the studio allowed the team to focus on establishing the fundamentals for the engine that we aimed to deliver on these specific features. We didn’t rush things and made promises for capabilities we hadn’t yet built or shown to our team.

In essence, as Dejan Dimic from Vibrant Visuals outlined, the objective is to enhance Minecraft in such a way that it becomes more accessible and beneficial for various devices, boosting its visual appeal. However, there’s no need to fret about it altering your gaming experience if you prefer things just the way they are.

Yes, it’s still Minecraft

A key feature of the Vibrant Visuals update is that, despite its stunning appearance, it maintains a strong resemblance to Minecraft. Compared to some high-end fan-made RTX texture packs currently available, the graphics in these mods can stray so far from the original game that it’s hardly recognizable.

Mojang decided to enhance the original appearance of Minecraft instead of changing it drastically. Although it looks amazing, it retains that iconic pixelated charm that Minecraft enthusiasts enjoy. If you prefer not to use this new look, you don’t have to. The Vibrant Visuals feature, similar to RTX support, is optional and can be turned on or off with a simple key press. Therefore, you can continue playing with the existing game textures and effects if you wish.

If you prefer sticking with your RTX textures pack, go ahead! Mojang isn’t taking away the RTX features or the freedom to use custom texture packs in the game. Instead, Vibrant Visuals is just another choice that has been added. As Psenka explained to TopMob, “The aim is to provide players with an additional way to experience the game, without eliminating any of their favorite, familiar options.

The improvements

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but be utterly captivated by the Vibrant Visuals update. It’s not just about fresh textures for all aspects of the game; it’s about the sheer amount of breathtaking sights that leave me awestruck.

One significant transformation concerns the sun. Previously, the sun was primarily used as a marker between day and night, and for navigation if you were lost. However, now the sunlight emanating from that large, golden orb in the sky not only signifies these periods but also illuminates everything it touches. This could be anything from light bouncing off bodies of water or glossy objects to the shadows it creates. The sun seems like a completely novel aspect in our game mechanics.

When designing fresh structures, remember to consider the position of the sun for an optimal layout. This is essential as sunlight will stream through windows, create shadows, and significantly enhance visual aesthetics. Glance at the images presented below to fully appreciate the sun’s growing significance in shaping the overall appearance of the game.

A significant alteration in Minecraft involves the way shadows are displayed. Historically, shadows have had minimal impact on gameplay, but this is set to transform. Now, the sun creates dynamic shadows that extend over all elements, even player characters. During our preliminary test phase, I found myself captivated for extended periods, just observing my shadow adjust as I moved my head, walked, or altered my stance. The fact that the shadows respond so well, look fantastic, and still align with Minecraft’s aesthetic is impressive.

The final version didn’t pop up right away; it required some time. However, unlike initially, the shadow effects in Vibrant Visuals appear pixelated, somewhat reminiscent of the Minecraft universe.

In a conversation with TopMob, Jasper Boerstra, the creative mind behind Vibrant Visuals, shared some insights about the initial stages of creating shadows in their work: “At first, the shadows were just like regular ones. We started off with soft shadows and then moved towards more defined, harder shadows.

The shadows appeared more lifelike, being rounder rather than adhering to Minecraft’s typical style. However, upon observing how the Vibrant Visuals sunlight system diffused light through the trees, he claimed that it inspired the team.

Wondering if there was a way to give it a pixilated look, he pondered. And so, they successfully implemented this idea, ensuring that the shadows, along with reflections off water surfaces and light passing through water, appeared in a pixilated form.

If you’re concerned that the new shadow effects might influence light levels and consequently affect mob spawning in the game, rest assured – Mojang has confirmed that these visual improvements won’t alter the gameplay mechanics.

The most captivating modification, nonetheless, is the water. It has never appeared more appealing. With its fresh textures and sunlight, it’s a visual treat. It sparkles, reflects light, and enhances everything around it. Furthermore, this transformation of the underwater environment is noteworthy. Thanks to the recent update, the water can now seem murky, adding an element of mystery as you can’t see too far. The way sunlight filters through it adds a touch of beauty. Discovering ocean monuments now seems like an enjoyable prospect again.

The bottom line

The Vibrant Visuals update brings an exhilarating enhancement to Minecraft that also holds great potential for newcomers. Over time, video game aesthetics can shift, and while Minecraft’s existing textures are still enjoyable for long-term enthusiasts, this upgrade is undeniably eye-catching. In fact, it’s the kind of improvement that might attract those who haven’t yet tried the game. Now, the game appears to be a part of the current gaming generation. Moreover, the Vibrant Visuals update leaves open possibilities for further visual evolution in the game.

Boerstra shared that our team now possesses a contemporary building framework for our rendering process, which we can further develop. This announcement marks the beginning of an interesting chapter in our project, Psenka added, hinting at many anticipated advancements and thrilling updates in the time to come.

When can you play it

As of now, Mojang hasn’t specified an exact launch date yet, but don’t worry, it won’t take too long. We’re anticipating a beta for Vibrant Visuals quite soon, and the full Bedrock release isn’t far behind. Garneji shared with TopMob that “the release is approaching within months, and it will be in your hands very, very quickly.
