Minecraft-style game Hytale officially canceled after 10 years in development

Following a decade of creation, Riot Games has decided to close the production of Hytale – an exceptionally ambitious sandbox game with aspirations to compete against Minecraft.

Hytale was initially unveiled in 2018, drawing immediate interest for its features such as minigames, modding possibilities, challenging boss battles, and dungeon exploration. The game’s grand design caught the eye of Riot Games, developers behind League of Legends, who took over the project in 2020.

On June 23, it was confirmed by one of the co-founders of Hypixel Studios, Aaron ‘Noxy’ Donaghey, that the team will cease development and initiate the closure process for the studio.

As a passionate admirer, I’d like to echo the sentiments expressed by Noxy: “This wasn’t the ending any of us at Hypixel or Riot were hoping for. After years of tireless effort, resilience, and relentlessly pursuing every viable path, it became evident that we couldn’t actualize Hytale in a manner that fully met its potential.

As a gamer, I’ve got to admit, even with the modifications, Hytale isn’t quite reaching its full potential yet. “I’ve been brainstorming ways to streamline things, adjust deadlines, and explore fresh perspectives. However, every one of those paths would have meant sacrificing what truly sets Hytale apart from other games.

At present, Riot is offering assistance with severance packages and job placement services to those team members impacted by the termination of the game.

Making this call is tough, but my faith in Hytale remains unwavering. I stand by the team, appreciating every individual – past and present – who infused their passion into this game. We’re not just proud; we’re downright ecstatic about the vision we brought to life, the daring leaps we made, and the soul we injected into this project. All that effort, all that creativity – it’s indelible.

In addition, the developer expressed gratitude towards the Hytale community for their support in motivating the team to continue diligently working on the project.

It was your unwavering faith in Hytale that fueled us through every challenge. Your passion, innovation, and encouragement propelled us to produce our finest work ever. Although we won’t be the ones to launch this game, we continue to hold dear its values and the immense promise of its genre.
