How farming crops works in Minecraft
To get started with farming, you’ll require some seeds and a committed piece of land for cultivation. Ordinary soil isn’t suitable for most seeds, so you’ll need to prepare it before you can set up a farm. It’s also advisable to enclose your chosen farm sections with a fence to keep away any uninvited creatures.
How to make farm plots
Initially, create a hoe tool that transforms dirt blocks into arable land. This transformed land can accommodate various types of in-game crops. To maintain these crops, you’ll need a water source, but only a single block of water is necessary to irrigate a 9×9 grid of farmland when placed at the center square.
Crop farming tips
For many types of crops, both natural and artificial light are essential, allowing for growth indoors or outdoors with adequate lighting. In fact, modern farming techniques include indoor farming, an example of which is shown in the image provided. Additionally, it’s advisable to place lights or torches around your outdoor crops at night to ensure continued growth.
To farm faster, use bone meal directly on the plants to accelerate crop growth.
Furthermore, certain crops may have unique water and cultivation needs, which we delve into in the upcoming sections.
Each growable crop in Minecraft
Below, we will walk you through locating and cultivating every farmable crop in Minecraft.
How to grow wheat
Wheat grains can be harvested from common grasses when they’re broken open. Starting a wheat crop is quite straightforward due to the abundance of its seeds. To cultivate them effectively, plant the seeds on previously plowed farmland, ensuring there’s at least one water source nearby, as discussed earlier. It’s essential to provide these crops with suitable lighting conditions for growth.
Wheat is used to cook food, breed animals, and even trade with villagers.
How to grow carrots
Carrots aren’t grown from seeds; rather, you plant them directly onto prepared farmland. Like before, each 9×9 square of farmland should have just one water source, similar to what we discussed earlier. They need light to prosper. You can find carrots in chests or villages when looting.
In several DIY projects and also for animal rearing (pigs, rabbits, and villagers), carrots can be employed.
How to grow potatoes
Similar to how you plant carrots directly onto cultivated soil, so does planting potatoes occur on tilled farmland. Just as previously stated, follow the rule of a 3×3 grid (9×9 section) of farmland with one water source. You can acquire potatoes from chests or villages.
These are great for fighting off hunger by cooking baked potatoes.
How to grow Beetroot
Growing beetroot involves using seeds, which can be obtained from villages or hidden in chests. To cultivate these seeds, you should plant them in designated farm plots, similar to how carrots, potatoes, and wheat are planted. As previously stated, a 3×3 area around the seed (a 9×9 grid of farmland) with one water block will help your beetroot grow successfully.
Beetroot is used for crafting red dye and cooking the Beetroot Soup recipe.
How to grow pumpkins
To cultivate pumpkins, you’ll require seeds. You can effortlessly collect these from pumpkins you find growing in open fields, or you might even stumble upon some hidden inside chests.
As a devoted gardener, I’ve learned that to cultivate pumpkin seeds, they should be sown in fertile soil, just like other crops. However, unlike most, pumpkins will grow on a square adjacent to where you planted them, which means they require a bit more space. You can still use the standard 9×9 farm plots, but some enthusiasts prefer arranging pumpkins in double rows for a more organized and visually appealing layout – much like what’s depicted in the image above.
Pumpkins can be used to make pumpkin pie. They can also be carved as jack o’lanterns.
How to grow melons
To cultivate melons, you should collect seeds, either by foraging for wild melons in dense jungles or villages located in savannas, or by discovering them in hidden chests. Gathering the seeds through foraging is typically the most efficient method, but sometimes you can also find them by chance inside chests.
To cultivate melons, they need to be sown in farmland, similar to how pumpkins and other aforementioned crops grow. They share the sunlight and water requirements with these crops. Additionally, like the mentioned pumpkins, melons grow in a similar pattern, requiring at least one open block of space adjacent to them for proper growth.
Melons can be eaten and also used to craft Glistering Melons.
How to grow sugar cane
You’ll often find sugarcane thriving around water sources such as rivers, lakes, or seashores. Simply venture out to one of these locations and carefully uproot the sugarcane stalks that are sprouting for a natural harvest.
Unlike many other crops, sugarcane doesn’t require farmland for growth. Instead, it thrives on sand and dirt surfaces, always needing proximity to water. To reap your harvest, ensure you only destroy one block above the stalk when harvesting, as this prevents the need to replant sugarcane.
Sugar cane is used for making resources like sugar and paper.
How to grow cocoa beans
Cocoa pods containing cocoa beans can be found on trees in a rainforest environment, often referred to as the jungle biome. It’s important to note that cocoa plants thrive exclusively in the jungle, so during your exploration of the jungle, don’t forget to gather some jungle wood. However, it’s worth mentioning that these pods can also grow on fallen jungle logs or wooden planks, not just full-grown trees.
Cocoa beans are used for making cookies and brown dye.
How to grow Nether wart
As its name implies, Nether Wart is only found within the Nether realm. It can be spotted growing atop fortress bastions and near staircases within these structures. Interestingly, it’s possible to cultivate Nether Wart in the Overworld, but this requires soul sand obtained from the Nether for planting. Unlike other crops, Nether Wart doesn’t require water or sunlight to grow.
Nether wart is a very important crop because it is a base ingredient for crafting potions.
How to grow Sweet Berries
As I roam through the lush spruce woodlands, I stumble upon sweet-tasting berries growing wild on bushes. Back at my base, I pluck these gems and plant them in ordinary soil blocks without needing a nearby water source for them to flourish.
Sweet Berries are a food source and can also be used to breed foxes.
How to farm Glow Berries
Glow Berries are collected from hanging vines deep within richly vegetated caverns, and occasionally they’re discovered inside treasure chests buried within mine shafts as well.
To cultivate these berries, simply set them beneath a block, ensuring there is at least a two-block space or more for the vines to expand and grow downwards.
Instead of consuming Glow Berries for food, they serve more effectively as ornamental light sources. Similar to Sweet Berries, these Glow Berries are useful in breeding foxes too.
How to grow mushrooms
Mushrooms can be found in numerous locations across the map. These spots tend to be shaded or dimly lit, such as beneath trees, within caves, and in dedicated mushroom groves.
In various forests, you might come across both red and earthy-brown mushroom species, and if you venture into the depths of a dark forest, you may discover colossal mushrooms. Gathering these giant fungi provides an opportunity to collect regular-sized mushrooms, with their color determined by the type being picked.
As a gamer, I’ve found that mushrooms thrive best in dimly lit corners. You can set them down on either dirt or stone, but remember to provide enough room around them for them to grow freely. These fungi are perfect for indoor cultivation, especially in the depths of a dark basement. However, if you prefer the outdoors or have access to natural or artificial caves, they’ll grow just as well there too!
Furthermore, you can accelerate their growth with the help of bone meal, and there’s even a possibility that it might transform an ordinary mushroom into a colossal one. Cultivating them on mycelium blocks makes it feasible to nurture them under typical household lighting conditions.
Mushrooms are used in various stew recipes.
How to grow fungus
In their natural habitats, which are the Crimson Forest and Warped Forest zones of the Nether, fungus grows abundantly. Occasionally, these fungi can be discovered in chests located within strongholds. After collection, both the Crimson and Warped types of fungi can be sown similarly to mushrooms. Unlike mushrooms, they don’t necessitate a light source and can be cultivated on diverse blocks of dirt or mycelium.
Bone meal can also turn both Crimson Forest and Warped fungus into huge fungus.
Crimson fungus can be used to breed hoglins and Warped fungus can be used to breed striders.
How to grow bamboo
Bamboo is native to jungle environments and can occasionally be obtained from sunken ships. Unlike other crops, neither soil nor water are required for its growth. Instead, it thrives under bright light conditions with ample room to grow vertically. To harvest your bamboo crop, ensure you break only the block directly above the stalk, as this eliminates the need to replant it.
Bamboo has various applications, including making bamboo blocks and scaffolds, nurturing giant pandas, and serving as an ornamental item when put in a flower pot.
How to grow cacti
Desert landscapes are home to cacti. Unlike many other plants, they do not require seeds for growth; instead, they should be planted directly onto sandy mounds.
Cacti can be used to make green dye. A cactus can also be placed in a flower pot for decor.
How to grow kelp
Kelp is exclusively situated beneath the ocean’s surface. After gathering some, this type of crop can be cultivated in natural water bodies or artificial tanks. It doesn’t require sunlight for growth. When harvesting your kelp crops, ensure you break off only the section above the roots to prevent replanting.
Dried kelp serves as an excellent food resource, while kelp blocks can function superbly as an alternative fuel source.
How to grow Sea Pickles
Harvesting Sea Pickles involves gathering them from their colonies situated at the bottom of tropical oceans and near coral reefs. Unlike conventional farming methods, these organisms aren’t typically cultivated artificially. Instead, increasing their numbers can be achieved by providing bone meal when they are submerged and attached to living coral blocks underwater.
Sea Pickles are used for a light source, decoration, and making lime dye.
How to grow trees
Apart from conventional vegetables and fruits, you could also consider cultivating your own trees. In the game of Minecraft, cutting down trees provides you with seeds that can be sown on dirt squares. Each tree species yields a distinct type of wood, ideal for crafting boards and various other objects.
All trees and their biome locations:
- Acacia – Savanna biome
- Azalea – Found above lush caves (oak tree variant)
- Birch – Birch forest biome
- Cherry – Cherry Blossom biome
- Dark oak – Dark forest biome
- Jungle – Jungle biome
- Mangrove – Swamp biome
- Oak – Most common tree found in various biomes, especially forests
- Spruce – Most common in the taiga biome
