Jason Momoa is coming back for a sequel to the Minecraft movie, and he’s given us some updates! He told Jimmy Fallon that filming will start at the end of April, and he really enjoyed the script, calling it very funny.
Jason Momoa praised the script, saying it was hilarious. He shared that he hadn’t laughed so hard at a script in years.
Jason Momoa admitted he didn’t understand the script for the first ‘Minecraft Movie,’ but he found the script for the sequel genuinely funny, saying he ‘laughed out loud’ while reading it.
The Minecraft movie, a huge box office success in 2025 with over $950 million in global earnings, is getting a sequel. Warner Bros. officially announced the follow-up in October 2025, with a planned release date of July 23, 2027. This puts it shortly after the release of the live-action Legend of Zelda movie, making for a packed summer for fans of video game adaptations.
Jared Hess, who directed the original film, is back to direct and help write the sequel. Most of the original cast, including Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen, are also expected to return, and some new actors will be joining them.
Hess shared with Deadline that he’d love to make a sequel, saying the world of Minecraft is vast and offers many opportunities for new stories.
We had a lot of ideas for the first installment that we weren’t able to explore, and I’d love to make a sequel. There’s already some discussion about it, which is really exciting! It would be fantastic to revisit that world, especially since the fans are clearly enjoying it – they went crazy for the hint we left in the end credits!
The sequel could focus on the character Alex, who was teased at the end of the film.
