Miley Cyrus Says She ‘Wasn’t Allowed’ to Perform ‘Hannah Montana’ Songs After She ‘Left Disney’: ‘Not Like I Wanted To’

Miley Cyrus had to leave “Hannah Montana” behind after exiting the Disney Channel.

On a recent episode of “The Ringer” podcast on Spotify, Cyrus mentioned that she was prohibited from performing any of the original tunes from her popular TV show “Hannah Montana” following its conclusion in 2011.

Following my departure from Disney, I was prohibited from singing any of the ‘Hannah Montana’ tunes. It wasn’t a desire on my part; blending ‘The Best Of Both Worlds’ with ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ wouldn’t have made much musical sense.”

“Since I left Disney, I couldn’t perform any of the ‘Hannah Montana’ songs. It wasn’t something I wished to do; combining ‘The Best Of Both Worlds’ with ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ wouldn’t have been musically appropriate.

She went on to say it was still painful to realize that those songs carry her voice and image, yet she was not permitted to perform them herself.

Following her recognition as a Disney Legend at D23 in 2024, she was granted approval to sing those songs in the future. This revelation was described by Miley as “pretty cool.

The show “Hannah Montana” aired on Disney Channel for five years (from 2006-2011), featuring a typical teenager who secretly leads the life of the famous pop star character by the same name. Besides Hannah, the cast included Emily Osment, Jason Earles, Billy Ray Cyrus, Mitchel Musso, and Moises Arias.

The ex-child actor’s current venture is titled “Something Beautiful,” a visual album lasting 55 minutes, set for release in theaters on June 12. During the debut, Cyrus honored all the women musicians whose art influenced her creations.

She expressed her deep admiration and respect for Tina Turner, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, and many other women who came before her, who have blazed a trail that she’s now following. She considers her path as her own but acknowledges that these icons have made it significantly easier by shattering barriers ahead of her.
