At this year’s Tribeca Festival in New York, Miley Cyrus is among the musical artists showcasing their documentaries and narrative films. Her visual album titled “Something Beautiful” premieres on June 6th at the Beacon Theatre, followed by a conversation with Cyrus after the screening; the album will be available starting May 30, allowing fans to get acquainted with her new songs before the event. The festival is brimming with musician-led events, making it Tribeca’s largest collection of music films, with Billy Joel’s documentary “And So It Goes” kicking off on opening night, June 4. Directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, Joel’s film features “rare archival footage” and showcases the “grit, genius, and soul” of his songwriting. The remaining musicians taking center stage include premieres for documentaries like “Billy Idol Should Be Dead, Depeche Mode: M, Move Ya Body: The Birth of House“, Eddie Vedder’s “Matter of Time, Metallica Saved My Life, Rebbeca (AKA Becky G)“, and more.
The movies in our selection also have a musical element within their casts: For instance, the film “Tow” about a homeless woman battling to reclaim her vehicle, features singers Ariana DeBose and Demi Lovato in supporting roles; similarly, “A Tree Fell in the Woods ” boasts Broadway stars Daveed Diggs, Josh Gad, and Ashley Park. Regardless of your musical preferences, there’s something for everyone, such as the live-action debut of “How to Train Your Dragon“, where you can swap songs for Toothless if that appeals to you.
