Microsoft's PC-Only Games Are An "Anomaly," Says Phil Spencer

As a long-time gamer with a soft spot for Microsoft’s offerings, I find it refreshing to see the company’s commitment to expanding their gaming horizon this fall. The upcoming releases of Towerborne, Ara: History Untold, and World of Warcraft: The War Within on PC, coupled with the promise of Towerborne on Xbox Series X|S, has truly piqued my interest.

This fall, Microsoft boasts an uncommon collection of PC-exclusive games among which are World of Warcraft: The War Within, Ara: History Untold, and Towerborne (still in early access). Notably, Towerborne is planned for release on Xbox Series X|S at a later date. However, don’t expect Microsoft to frequently bypass consoles with their games. According to the CEO of gaming at Microsoft, Phil Spencer, this instance of console skipping was an unusual occurrence unlikely to happen again.

Spencer explained to Game File, “These findings are significant in our context, though there may be occasional exceptions. I view those three instances as exceptional cases. Our aim is to ensure our games can be played on a variety of devices. We consider the Xbox platform as encompassing the Xbox console, PC, and cloud. We strive for our games to be compatible with all these platforms. We’re aiming for a ‘Play Everywhere’ experience.

Although there seems to be no imminent plan for World of Warcraft to appear on Xbox consoles, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, has shown enthusiasm about collaborating with Sony and making some of Microsoft’s exclusive games available on PlayStation. A notable example is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, while upcoming titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will first debut on Xbox consoles and PC before eventually becoming accessible on PS5 as well. Spencer also emphasized his broader aim to let players own a game regardless of where they choose to play it.

Spencer stated that the goal is to reach a stage where, regardless if you purchase on cloud (a new platform), PC, or console, your ownership extends across the entire Xbox family.
