Microsoft’s AI Game Tech Flops: Fans Unimpressed

Microsoft recently revealed a new AI model capable of creating visuals and actions within video games, yet the gaming community expresses dissatisfaction.

Muse, the model in question, was created through partnership with Ninja Theory, a video game development company that falls under Xbox Game Studios, which is part of Microsoft’s gaming sector.

The action is taken due to increasing production expenses and careful consumer spending patterns in the gaming world, as players tend to favor established games during times of financial instability.

“We are already using Muse to develop a real-time playable AI model trained on other first-party games, and we see potential for this work to one day benefit both players and game creators,” said Fatima Kardar, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for gaming AI.

Nevertheless, fan reactions have been rather lackluster. A popular post by Geoff Keighley on platform X, viewed over 165.9K times, demonstrated the AI’s abilities.

Microsoft unveiled ‘Muse,’ an innovative artificial intelligence-powered video game developed alongside Ninja Theory. Here’s a demonstration of never-before-seen gameplay clips from the Bleeding Edge game, which were generated with human input and direction.

Fans are not impressed with AI model

The provided GIF, showcasing the gameplay, received broad criticism. One user commented that it appears common and devoid of life. Another user stated that it’s interesting but seems messy. They don’t believe we have reached a level suitable for AI games yet. Perhaps in five years, they suggested.

Other individuals expressed more critical opinions: “Wow… The raw footage is poor quality. What’s the ‘Bleeding Edge’ of this? It feels like outdated technology,” one user joked. Another cautioned, “I fear AI-driven games will lead to another video game market collapse, and many major publishers may not survive afterward.

As per Microsoft, Muse is currently in its initial development phase, with further information likely to be revealed at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in 2025.

Back in 2024, Microsoft didn’t just dabble in AI for gaming for the first time. They actually tested an AI chatbot for Xbox gamers and rolled out an AI function that captures everything you perform on your computer as screen shots.
