As a seasoned gamer and follower of the gaming industry, I can’t help but feel a sense of melancholy when I hear about studios like Arkane Austin shutting down. The talent that was housed within those walls was truly special, as evidenced by their past works like Dishonored and Prey. Raphael Colantonio’s comments about the closure being a “dumb move” resonate deeply with me, not just because of my admiration for the games they produced, but also due to my understanding of the unique chemistry that can exist within such teams.
Raphael Colantonio, founder of Arkane Studios, has spoken out about Microsoft’s decision to close down Arkane Austin earlier this year. He describes this action as a “misguided” choice on Microsoft’s part. In the opinion of the seasoned game developer, Arkane Austin was home to a unique team with the ability to create another successful game, but unfortunately, they never had that opportunity after the less-than-favorable reception of Redfall.
Colantonio told PC Gamer that Arkane Austin was an exceptional team of creators who produced amazing work, and they could do it again. However, he pointed out that replicating such a unique group is essentially impossible and requires a great deal of time. When you have the right combination of talent like Harvey Smith and Ricardo Bare, it’s a rare moment in history that just happened to work out that way. Those individuals together can create magic, but simply trying to hire more people or pay them excessively won’t guarantee success. Instead, it’s foolish to think that can be easily replicated.
After the successful launch of Prey in 2017, Colantonio chose to depart from the company he founded, due to creative disagreements as revealed in an interview with PC Gamer. In his own words, “What I can share is that one factor for my departure from Bethesda was their reluctance to produce the type of games we aspired to create.” He elaborated that Bethesda had opted to focus on developing live-service games at that time.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m always keeping tabs on the latest developments in the industry. It was sad to learn that Arkane Austin has closed shop, but I’m glad to know that Arkane Lyon, the studio behind Deathloop, is still going strong and currently working on Marvel’s Blade. On a less optimistic note, Alpha Dog Games, Roundhouse Games, and Tango Gameworks had to call it quits in May, but there was some good news a few months later when PUBG publisher Krafton acquired the Hi-Fi Rush developer. Many employees have returned to Tango, and now they’re working on Hi-Fi Rush 2, a game that Krafton isn’t expecting to be immediately profitable, but they see it as crucial for fostering creativity in our field.
In recent updates, Sony recently closed down their development studio, Firewalk Studios, due to the unsuccessful debut of their live-service game Concord back in August. This unfortunate event means that Concord will no longer be available or updated in the future.
