As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest offering from Microsoft – Game Assist in Edge browser – has piqued my interest. The idea of having all necessary game-related information at my fingertips while I’m immersed in the game itself is nothing short of revolutionary.
Regardless if you’re trying to enhance a build in Diablo 4, following a guide for Rise of the Golden Idol, or mastering a combo in Street Fighter 6, the internet proves essential while gaming. Microsoft has rolled out a novel feature called Game Assist within its Edge browser, aiming to make it your top choice when gaming companions are needed.
Game Assist serves as a customized version of Edge tailored for gaming, which becomes accessible via the Windows Game Bar triggered by WinKey+G or the Xbox controller button. Upon activating the Game Assist browser within the Game Bar overlay, it can be anchored to your screen, allowing it to float above your gameplay. Adjustable transparency options ensure minimal distraction when pinned. The standout feature is the “game-sensitive new tab page.
At the moment, this functionality is limited to a small selection of games due to it being in the beta testing phase. However, when fully live, Microsoft plans for this game-oriented New Tab page within Edge to automatically identify the game you’re playing, thereby offering relevant game guides for your convenience. This updated version of Edge will retain all the same information as your regular Edge browser, including saved passwords, bookmarks, and so forth.
The list of games includes Baldur’s Gate 3, Diablo IV, Minecraft, Roblox, Overwatch 2, Valorant, Fortnite, Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga, and League of Legends.
There’s an important caveat to all of this, though. You have to be willing to use the Windows Game Bar, of course, but right now, you also have to obtain the Microsoft Edge Beta browser and make it your default browser. For many who have committed to Chrome, Firefox, or some other browser, that’s going to be a non-starter. Microsoft hasn’t clarified whether Edge will have to be the default browser in the full release. Microsoft’s official page doesn’t clarify what ways the browser is optimized for gaming, but it would presumably have the browser consuming less memory and optimizing how much of your processor it can use in any given moment.
Playing Games just got more intriguing with Game Assist! Imagine having all the Diablo IV build details right in front of me while I’m gaming, streamlining the build process like never before. Or how about a custom map that pinpoints every hidden treasure in open-world games, making collection a breeze? These features sound incredibly handy, but for now, they’re only available in preliminary stages. And if the web browser requirement persists, it might limit the number of gamers who can truly benefit from this tool.
If you’re eager to test the feature immediately, Microsoft provides a step-by-step guide for setup on the announcement webpage.
