As an avid gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of Microsoft entering the handheld console market. I still remember the thrill of playing Game Boy Advance SP on long car rides and the convenience of Nintendo DS during my university years. The idea of having an Xbox in a portable format is tantalizingly close to becoming a reality, thanks to Phil Spencer’s recent revelations.
As a hardcore gamer, I can’t help but notice the ongoing reign of the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch in the portable gaming scene. Yet, it looks like Microsoft is ready to shake things up with their upcoming handheld console entry into the market.
It’s not surprising that Microsoft is developing a handheld device. During an Xbox Podcast in March, it was disclosed that they had been working on prototypes for such devices and were considering their production at some point in the future. However, neither Microsoft nor its executives have officially confirmed these rumors, only subtly hinting at them in June.
Following an interview with the CEO of Microsoft and Bloomberg, it’s now official that the handheld devices mentioned earlier are indeed under development, as confirmed personally by Phil Spencer.
According to Bloomberg’s report, the executive – known for his fondness of handheld gaming devices – suggested that it’s probable the company will venture into this particular market.
Indeed, while Phil Spencer hasn’t given a specific timeline for their arrival, he has hinted that the company is considering introducing new devices at some point in the future. However, as emphasized by Spencer, “In the long run, I’m excited about us developing hardware and believe our team could create something truly innovative. But we want to be guided by current trends and knowledge.
Given the circumstances, it seems we might have to wait a couple more years for substantial Xbox portable updates, taking into account the forthcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, hints about a Steam Deck 2, and the constant evolution of their hardware and performance.
Indeed, although Spencer hasn’t explicitly stated a timeline yet, this marks the first significant hint at a new device, which is thrilling news for Xbox enthusiasts eagerly anticipating portable versions of their beloved games.
As you anticipate further updates on the upcoming Xbox handheld device, here’s our take on why we believe it might not be the slam dunk that Microsoft is aiming for.
