Microsoft Reportedly Pauses Development On Xbox Handheld

It appears that last year there was news about Microsoft developing prototypes for a portable Xbox console, which might challenge the Steam Deck from Valve. But recent reports indicate that, for the time being, Microsoft is setting aside their plans for a dedicated Xbox handheld device.

As reported by Windows Central, Microsoft is choosing to prioritize enhancing gaming capabilities on third-party devices like ASUS’ Project Kennan running on Windows 11, rather than focusing on its own Xbox handheld at this time. However, it’s important to note that Microsoft hasn’t abandoned the idea of releasing a handheld device and continues to work on related technologies for future development. In other words, while they have other things to attend to right now, they haven’t given up on the dream of their own handheld.

For nearly twenty years, whispers have circulated regarding potential handheld Xbox gaming devices. In fact, Microsoft’s Gaming CEO, Phil Spencer, has admitted to the existence of prototype handheld Xbox consoles during past development stages; however, these prototypes never progressed beyond their initial stages.

Last year, Spencer hinted at the potential of a new Xbox portable device, though he didn’t outright confirm it. Moreover, he mentioned that any such Xbox portable was likely still several years away. Lately, Spencer has been showcasing his gaming experience with the Lenovo Legion Go, and expressed hope that his team could produce some groundbreaking innovations on an Xbox handheld.

It has been speculated before that the upcoming Xbox console might be compatible with a portable device, similar to Nintendo’s Switch. However, recent news from Windows Central indicates that the development of the next Xbox console is continuing uninterrupted despite the initial pause on the potential handheld device. This new information might challenge the validity of earlier reports about the handheld device.

Previously this year, Xbox President Sarah Bond hinted at Microsoft’s upcoming home console promising the biggest technological advancement in Xbox’s lifespan. However, as of now, Microsoft remains tight-lipped regarding the specifics of this system and its potential launch date.
