Microsoft Pauses Certain Players' Windows Updates Over Ubisoft-Game Stability Issues

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of updates and patches that have left more chaos than order. The recent Windows 11 24H2 update has been no exception, especially for those of us who enjoy diving into the rich worlds created by Ubisoft.

Due to numerous complaints about incompatibilities, Microsoft is no longer automatically installing Windows updates on computers running a selection of Ubisoft games such as Star Wars Outlaws, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

2024 saw most of the year spent testing the Windows 11 24H2 update, which was finally released to many users last month. Users who have updated and played Ubisoft games have reported various instabilities, such as startup problems and frequent crashes with several titles. Microsoft has acknowledged these issues and is currently investigating them, temporarily halting automatic updates on computers that carry multiple Ubisoft games. They also advise players to refrain from manually updating until a solution is found.

Based on information from Microsoft’s list of problems associated with the 24H2 update, the following Ubisoft games may encounter difficulties during the Windows update process:

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  • Star Wars Outlaws
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Ubisoft is taking steps to rectify problems with Star Wars Outlaws by releasing a patch. If you’ve already updated the game to version 24H2, this patch offers a temporary solution. However, keep in mind that while it addresses some issues, performance and stability troubles might persist until a definitive fix is developed.

To put it simply, it’s advisable to skip the 24H2 update altogether if possible, since Microsoft has made efforts to stop unintentional automatic updates. If you find yourself in a situation where you can’t avoid the update and are experiencing issues with certain games, you might consider performing a fresh Windows installation as a workaround, since a solution from Microsoft or Ubisoft doesn’t seem to be forthcoming soon.
