Microsoft’s CEO cautioned that if AI doesn’t provide enough clear benefits to outweigh its increasing energy consumption, people may lose faith in the technology.
With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, there’s increasing worry about its energy consumption, the need for more data centers, and the resulting effects on the environment.
Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, recently spoke about the current excitement surrounding AI. He explained that continued public support for AI isn’t automatic – people will only stay interested if the technology delivers tangible benefits now, not just potential benefits in the future.
Microsoft CEO says AI needs to deliver clear benefits
At the World Economic Forum on January 20, 2026, Satya Nadella explained that the continued adoption of AI depends on whether its benefits justify the resources needed to run it.
Nadella believes we need to use technology to improve lives and create positive change for individuals, communities, nations, and businesses. Otherwise, he questions the value of its development.
He warned that if AI doesn’t demonstrate clear benefits, public trust could erode, particularly when it comes to its energy usage.
If these digital tokens aren’t demonstrably improving things like healthcare, education, government services, and the ability of businesses – both big and small – to compete, we’ll quickly lose public support for using valuable resources like energy to create them.
Satya Nadella’s statements are particularly significant because Microsoft is a leader in the current AI revolution. The company has invested heavily in OpenAI and is quickly building more data centers worldwide to power AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot.
This announcement comes shortly after Microsoft’s head of AI, Mustafa Suleyman, predicted that within five years, everyone will likely have a highly personalized AI assistant.
