Microsoft CEO says Black Ops 6 broke CoD and Game Pass records

As a veteran gamer with decades of Call of Duty under my belt, I must say, Black Ops 6 has truly outdone itself. The sheer number of concurrent players it gathered during its launch weekend was nothing short of astounding, surpassing even the legendary Modern Warfare 3. It’s clear that the gaming community is hungry for more CoD action, and Treyarch has delivered in spades.

On an earnings conference, Microsoft announced that Call of Duty experienced its largest debut among all titles within the series.

Despite criticism about Multiplayer’s disappointing map pool, skill-based matchmaking and troublesome glitches, Black Ops 6 had a successful launch weekend.

Over the initial weekend, Battlefield 6 managed to outperform Modern Warfare 3’s record by hosting over 306,000 simultaneous players on Steam, making it the most popular game in terms of concurrent users.

It was advantageous for Activision and Microsoft, as the release of Black Ops 6 brought in record-breaking numbers of concurrent players on its debut day and a significant surge in new Game Pass subscriptions within a 24-hour period, according to CharlieIntel’s report.

During its debut weekend, game BO6 saw the largest number of player connections ever recorded in a Call of Duty series launch. Moreover, it outperformed every other Call of Duty title with regards to total players, hours spent playing, and number of games played.

Microsoft CEO says Black Ops 6 broke CoD and Game Pass records

According to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the debut of Black Ops 6 last week marked the largest release in Call of Duty history. It broke records for day one players and new subscribers on launch day for Game Pass. Furthermore, sales on PlayStation and Steam increased by more than 60% compared to the same period last year.

Fans of both BO6 and Xbox had their doubts about the game’s performance due to it being released on Game Pass on the same day, a fact that made them question its success.

To address those worries, Microsoft’s Chief Financial Officer, Amy Hood, has warned that Xbox’s annual revenue might decrease compared to last year, as Call of Duty is currently available on Game Pass. This means that the income from this title is generated progressively, month over month, rather than all at once.

The question lies in finding methods for Treyarch to maintain player interest even during later stages of the game. Matt Cox, General Manager of Call of Duty, has assured fans that the development team still has plenty more to offer.

From the very beginning, our aim was to make this fantastic game accessible to as many gamers as we can, regardless of their location or playing style. Black Ops 6 is an outstanding game, and the feedback from the Call of Duty community has been phenomenal. This is just the start; Nuketown is approaching soon, and Season 1 is not far off. We’re ready to embark on this exciting journey together!

Black Ops 6 Season 1 officially arrives on Thursday, November 14, 2024.
