Stepping up from the intense societal critique of “Dreams,” filmmaker Michel Franco is now gearing up to present “Moscas” (“Flies”), directed by Fernando Eimbcke in my upcoming reviews.
Currently wrapping up pre-production, the project is scheduled to start filming next month. This story focuses on an 8-year-old boy and a middle-aged woman traveling across modern Mexico City. The script was penned by Eimbcke in collaboration with Vanesa Garnica, and they will be producing this film alongside Franco and Eréndira Núñez Larios under their production companies Kinotitlán and Teorema.
Eimbcke shares, “I’ve been acquainted with Michel for quite some time now. We began our collaborative journey in creating short films about three decades ago. Over the years, he’s been a great mentor to me, teaching me valuable lessons. Despite our work being distinctly different, I find this contrast fascinating, which is why, after a decade without making a film, I was eager to seek his advice on how to become more productive in my artistic endeavors.
In 2004, Carlos Eimbcke made a splash at Cannes’ Critics Week with his first full-length film, “Duck Season.” Filmed in black and white and entirely within an apartment in Mexico City, the movie garnered praise from critics and festivals around the world. This recognition led Alfonso Cuarón to team up with Warner Independent Pictures for a U.S. release. Eimbcke’s subsequent films also earned accolades: “Lake Tahoe” won two prestigious awards at Berlin in 2008, and “Club Sandwich” premiered in Toronto before taking home top honors at San Sebastián in 2013.
Following a decade of development and scriptwriting, director Eimbcke returned to filmmaking with “Olmo,” a heartfelt family comedy that had its premiere at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Eimbcke and Garnica jointly penned the screenplay for this latest production, while Teorema teamed up with Plan B Entertainment’s Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner for co-production. This collaboration was discussed during a EFM Industry Talk at this year’s Berlinale, led by Elsa Keslassy from EbMaster.
Garnica, an author of six novels, has not only penned numerous screenplays with Eimbcke but also plans to bring these collaborations to life. Besides their joint projects like “Los niños de Morelia” and “Chiqui,” the pair are working on “Casandra,” an upcoming animated film that is currently in production, which Garnica wrote.
Michel Franco and Eréndira Núñez Larios have been making over a dozen films under their banner Teorema since 2019. Their productions include Michel Franco’s Venice-winning films “New Order” and “Memory,” as well as his latest movie, “Dreams,” which debuted in competition at the Berlinale this year. They have also supported projects by Lorenzo Vigas, David Zonana, and Fernando Eimbcke.
