As a cinephile with a penchant for the bizarre and a soft spot for Tim Burton’s works, the anticipation for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has been palpable. And now, having learned about Jenna Ortega’s encounter with Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of camaraderie. If meeting the original ghost-with-the-most in full makeup gave me a heart attack, what must it have been like for poor Jenna?
Jenna Ortega encountered Beetlejuice prior to working with Michael Keaton on Tim Burton’s new “Beetlejuice” film, a project long-anticipated by fans. In a chat on “The Tonight Show,” Ortega shared her experiences when she first met a legendary figure like Keaton as he took on one of his most renowned roles. Her response? Quite terrifying.
“Ortega stated that someone suddenly appeared behind him. At the time, he was undergoing a trial run for hair and makeup, when he felt a gentle tap on his shoulder. Turning around, he was startled indeed. The person introduced himself as Michael, but his face had molds falling off it.”
“Ortega said, laughing, ‘I acted casual the first time, but it remained cool until we met again since I didn’t recognize him before and had to reintroduce myself.’ “
In the “Beetlejuice” follow-up, Michael Keaton teams up with Tim Burton once more, along with original stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. Joining them are new faces such as Selena Ortega and Willem Dafoe. The storyline revolves around the complicated bond between Lydia Deetz, played by Ryder, and her daughter, Astrid, portrayed by Ortega.
In an interview with Vanity Fair recently, Ortega characterized Astrid as “unusual, yet in a manner distinct from what one might initially expect.”
She mentioned that the connection between Lydia and Astrid, my character, plays a significant role in the sequel. It’s also quite peculiar as it involves a lot of filling in gaps about Lydia’s life since then, which I believe adds a delightful touch for anyone who adores the character and is eager to revisit her.
Ortega expressed her enthusiasm about reviving the “Beetlejuice” franchise in 2024, particularly since it involved introducing its gothic style to a newer generation.
“Ortega expressed that today’s studios are focused on filling seats by producing reboots, sequels, or similar content. However, reviving ‘Beetlejuice’, among all stories, is particularly excellent because it allows people to re-engage with unusual, peculiar, and somewhat disconcerting tales again. He believes that exposing the current generation, often engrossed in their phones, to fresh, innovative, and artistic concepts is essential. In fact, he thinks that the more unconventional a film is, the wider its audience will likely be, which could significantly benefit the movie industry as a whole.”
The movie “Beetlejuice” by Warner Bros. hits theaters starting September 6, following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. You can catch a full interview with Ortega on “The Tonight Show” in the video linked below.
