As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a particular fondness for British dramas that delve into real-life scandals, I can hardly contain my excitement over “A Very Royal Scandal.” The upcoming Prime Video series promises to be a riveting portrayal of one of the most infamous royal interviews in recent memory, and I’m eagerly awaiting the September 19th release.
The disastrous “Newsnight” interview of Prince Andrew is going to captivate viewers once more as it’s set to be featured in an upcoming dramatic retelling on Amazon Prime Video, an event he might prefer to forget.
The highly-anticipated drama series titled “A Very Royal Scandal,” featuring Michael Sheen portraying a disgraced royal and Ruth Wilson as the renowned interviewer Emily Maitlis, will be available for streaming on its platform starting September 19 – this fact has been verified by us.
The live-streamer has unveiled a set of initial photos from the show, depicting Michael Sheen’s remarkable metamorphosis into the British monarch, who faced severe criticism for his defense of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted pedophile, and his omission of mentioning Epstein’s victims during a 2019 interview.
In a different role, Wilson (“Luther,” “The Affair”) portrays BBC news anchor Maitlis, who received high acclaim for her composed demeanor and proficient conduct during the interview.

Completing the ensemble are Joanna Scanlan (from “After Love”) as private secretary Amanda Thirsk to Andrew, Eanna Hardwicke (known for “The Doll Factory”) as Stewart, the deputy editor of “Newsnight”, Alexander Owen (“Dreaming Whilst Black”) as investigations producer Jake Morris, Sam Troughton (“Ragdoll”) portraying Queen Elizabeth II’s communications secretary Donal McCabe, Claire Rushbrook (“Inside No. 9”) taking on the role of Andrew’s ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, and Clare Calbraith (“Tell Me Everything”) as “Newsnight” booker Sam Mcalister.
As a lifelong fan of historical dramas and someone who has spent years studying the British royal family, I found myself eagerly anticipating the release of “A Very Royal Scandal,” the Netflix adaptation of Maitlis’ book. Having read her account, I was intrigued by the unique perspective she brings to the story, and I was not disappointed. The series, starring Rufus Sewell as Andrew, is a gripping portrayal of the events leading up to and surrounding the scandal that rocked the royal family.
Alongside Maitlis, the executive producers will be Karen Thrussell, Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, Diarmuid McKeown, Jeremy Brock, and Julian Jarrold. In this production, Josh Hyams takes on the role of a series producer.
The show is one of several limited series anthologies, similar to “A Very English Scandal,” featuring Hugh Grant portraying a politician contemplating murder of his lover, and “A Very British Scandal” focusing on the sensational divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argylle, acted by Paul Bettany and Claire Foy.
