As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that Michael Mann‘s latest move is nothing short of revolutionary. The creation of “Michael Mann’s Ferrari Expanded” website is a testament to the director’s dedication to transparency and the art of storytelling.
Renowned director Michael Mann unveiled plans for a comprehensive website detailing the production process behind his 2023 biopic “Ferrari,” titled “Michael Mann’s Ferrari Expanded.” At the Red Sea International Film Festival, he shared this exciting news and gave festival-goers a sneak peek into the abundance of content they can expect on the platform.
He mentioned that when the festival suggested a masterclass, it sparked an idea in him to share with you the unique website. The reason being, he wanted to give people a glimpse into the journey of how directors create a film like ‘Ferrari’. This particular website is unlike any other because we developed it while filming the movie itself.
The “Enhanced Version” of Mann’s movie, titled “Ferrari,” will offer more than 200 videos and around 3,400 documents detailing the production process. This film, starring Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, and Shailene Woodley, is set in the summer of 1957, where Enzo Ferrari grapples with financial difficulties while managing intense family drama. The collection includes exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from the movie’s production, with dedicated segments focusing on the filming of the pivotal Mille Miglia Race, as well as in-depth character notes penned by Mann himself, accompanied by interviews with the cast and crew.
The director enthusiastically shared, ‘I find directing films to be the most thrilling endeavor one can undertake in life.’ Crafting a movie like ‘Ferrari’ was an intriguing experience that consumed my existence for a year and a half. We aimed to give others a glimpse into this captivating realm by creating a website designed for film enthusiasts, cinephiles, students of cinema, and anyone interested in the art of filmmaking. Additionally, we wanted to preserve the unique journey of making ‘Ferrari’ on this platform.
The director shared that his concept initially sparked when his daughter suggested he should save the work generated during movie-making. He expressed enthusiasm about sharing an authentic story of filmmaking directly with the public, bypassing intermediaries or commercial influences. “This,” he explained, “is the genuine, unfiltered account of our creative process.
The filmmaker was asked about which directors he would like to gain such extensive insight into their creative work, and without hesitation, he named Alejandro González Iñárritu, Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro, Stanley Kubrick, along with a few others. He stated, “The amount of investigation and depth a director undertakes is far more than what appears on screen. Though some parts may be dull, there are other aspects that are incredibly intriguing.
Mann failed to provide a timeline for when the website will be accessible to the general public, nor did he entertain questions from the audience during his presentation.
During the short chat after Mann showed his platform, the filmmaker chose not to delve into specifics about the upcoming sequel to the 1995 thriller “Heat”. Instead, he mentioned casually that the script needs to be completed soon and that he would work on it during his flight back to Los Angeles.
In my enthusiasm, I’d like to share that Mann, much like myself, harbors a deep-seated ambition to bring to life a project close to his heart – the epic tale of the Battle of Huế, a pivotal event during the Vietnam War in 1968. This has been a long-cherished dream for him, as elements of his research on this conflict have subtly influenced the backstory of Al Pacino’s character, Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, in “Heat.
