Michael Jackson Doc Leaving Neverland 2 Premieres on YouTube

The 2019 documentary titled “Leaving Neverland,” which delved into allegations of child abuse against Michael Jackson, is coming back with a sequel, but this time not on HBO. Dan Reed’s movie was successful on that platform and even won a Primetime Emmy for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special. However, the sequel, titled “Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson,” is now available on YouTube in the United States. Here’s what we currently know about the upcoming installment and the legal matters surrounding it.

What is Leaving Neverland 2 about?

In simpler terms, the original documentary “Leaving Neverland” detailed the accusations of child sexual abuse against Michael Jackson made by Wade Robson and James Safechuck. The sequel focuses on their efforts to bring a lawsuit against Jackson’s companies, now controlled by his estates, and their ongoing legal battle which is scheduled for trial in California in 2026.

Where and when is it available?

The complete 53-minute video documentary can be found on YouTube right now. This documentary was first shown in the United Kingdom on March 18, on Channel 4.

Why isn’t it on HBO or Max?

After the airing of “Leaving Neverland” in 2020, the Michael Jackson estate filed a $100 million lawsuit against HBO, alleging that they breached a 1992 agreement not to disparage. The lawsuit was resolved by both parties in 2024, with HBO reportedly removing “Leaving Neverland” from their Max platform as part of the settlement.

What has the creator said?

Dan Reed, the British director responsible for both films, expressed that releasing the documentary on YouTube wasn’t his preferred option. He shared with Variety on March 13th, “I would have preferred to release this through HBO, but unfortunately, that wasn’t an option due to the ongoing lawsuit or dispute.” He added, “They don’t contact me about the case details; everything is kept confidential, so I’m in the dark about it.” Despite this, Reed appears more enthusiastic about the YouTube release compared to a streaming project. In an interview with Deadline on March 13th, he suggested that the world of streaming might be more cautious when it comes to controversial or sensitive subjects, as they aim to avoid offending their large subscriber base by presenting anything that isn’t completely safe.

Will there be another installment?

This planned series consists of three segments, with the final segment focusing on the trial. Reed shared with Variety that he views this movie, which is the second part, as serving as a “transitional film between the rather attention-grabbing beginning and what I anticipate will be a highly impactful conclusion.
