One of the most legendary film franchises, “Back to the Future,” continues to captivate audiences even 35 years after its last release. Surprisingly, there have been no sequels, remakes, or reboots, yet its popularity remains unwavering. Owners of original props from the film hold a piece of cinematic history in their hands, and now, the cast is reuniting to locate one such item.
It seems that the iconic red Gibson ES-345 guitar used by Marty McFly in the movie “Back to the Future” during his rendition of “Johnny B. Goode” has gone missing since the film was produced. Now, Gibson Guitars and some key cast members such as Michael J. Fox, Lea Thompson, Huey Lewis, and others connected with the movie are joining forces for a search mission called “Lost to the Future“. Take a look at the promotional video below for more details.
Among the iconic scenes in that classic film, Marty McFly’s guitar-playing moment stands out as particularly memorable. Since Michael J. Fox himself played the guitar, the scene appeared remarkably authentic on-screen. However, achieving that level of realism required considerable effort from him.
It’s understandable, given the unexpected success of “Back to the Future,” which included two sequels, that the guitar from the movie might have vanished. Since nobody could have predicted its massive popularity back then, it’s likely that many of the movie’s props, including the guitar, were not carefully preserved.
As a movie buff, I’ve noticed an interesting trend – sometimes, cast and crew members will take props as souvenirs from the film-making process. In this case, the Gibson guitar is a prop that not only adds to the film but could also be practically used by someone who plays it. It might even help recreate the scene we’re about to witness.
Surely, if a person from the “Back to the Future” film set had taken the guitar, one might assume that it would have surfaced in the last 40 years. Since it hasn’t been found yet, it must have wound up in an unexpected place, leaving not only everyone unaware of its whereabouts but also offering no clues as to its location. This is why a search campaign has been launched.
After attending Universal Studios’ Fan Fest Nights and personally standing atop the Clock Tower set from their backlot, I can attest to the authenticity of stepping into the history of “Back to the Future” myself.
If the individual in possession of the guitar acknowledges their ownership, the campaign could gain enough traction that they might choose to disclose their finding. From what we see in the video, it seems people are more interested in locating the guitar rather than acquiring it. However, if the method by which the owner obtained the guitar is questionable, there’s a chance they may not wish to discuss it publicly, given that such instances of acquiring props illegally are not unheard of.
