Feeling sad after the end of FX’s Love Story? Netflix has a new series about the Kennedy family that might cheer you up. They’ve released a first look at Michael Fassbender playing Joseph Kennedy Sr. in a show simply titled Kennedy. Think of it as The Crown, but set in America. Production is already underway in London (yes, London!). The series, based on the book JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917–1956, will explore how Joseph Kennedy Sr. built the Kennedy dynasty. While JFK’s presidency was often compared to Camelot, this show promises a more gritty and potentially scandalous look at the family’s origins – a bit like a darker version of Disney’s The Sword in the Stone. Imogen Poots, who plays Gloria Swanson, could be seen as the series’ mischievous villain, similar to Madam Mim.
The Kennedy family drama continues with Laura Donnelly as Rose Kennedy, caught between her husband, Joe Sr., and Swanson. Nick Robinson will play the favored son, Joe Jr., while Joshuah Melnick takes on the role of Jack Kennedy, who would later become president. Tipper Seifert-Cleveland will portray the heartbreaking story of Rosemary Kennedy. The cast also includes Wyatt Russell as Charles Lindbergh, Caitlin FitzGerald as Clare Boothe Luce, a playwright and politician, and Toby Huss as Franklin D. Roosevelt. Toby Huss proves his versatility, having played characters ranging from the incredibly strong Artie to the uniquely vulnerable Cotton Hill and now, a president in a wheelchair.
