Michael Fassbender Auditioned for James Bond but Suggested Daniel Craig to Producers: ‘I Don’t Know Why I Was Promoting Him. I Should’ve Promoted Myself’

Michael Fassbender disclosed on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that he proposed Daniel Craig for the role of James Bond during his own tryout for “Casino Royale.

I happened to run into Barbara Broccoli and had an audition for the role before Daniel Craig was chosen, but it seems I wasn’t really a contender. However, I recall walking into that office and meeting with her and Michael G. Wilson, and I remember saying something like ‘Daniel Craig is great for this role,’ instead of focusing on myself.

The actor further explained, ‘I struggled with auditions,’ especially when it came to the one for ‘Mad Max: Fury Road.’ Unfortunately, I arrived an hour late at Warner Bros., which undoubtedly cost me the role. Daniel excelled and became one of the most successful Bonds ever, but there were no follow-up discussions after that.”

Or,

“The actor continued, ‘I’ve always been bad at auditions.’ Regrettably, I missed my chance for ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ by turning up late to Warner Bros. by an hour. Daniel did exceptionally well and became a highly successful Bond, but there were no more talks following that.

Fassbender was among several promising actors trying out for the role of Bond when the series was re-launched following Pierce Brosnan’s last appearance in “Die Another Day.” Among the top contenders who emerged during the casting process was Henry Cavill, but producers felt he was too young at the time. In an interview with Express UK last year, director Martin Campbell praised Cavill’s audition as remarkable.

Campbell remarked, ‘He performed exceptionally well during the audition. His acting was outstanding.’ Furthermore, if Daniel hadn’t been around, Henry would have been an exceptional choice for Bond. He was quite impressive, in excellent physical condition…very attractive and well-defined. However, he seemed a bit young at that moment in time.

The hunt for a replacement for Daniel Craig as James Bond continues, as he’s now moved on from playing 007 following five films. To hear more about his thoughts on the role, check out Fassbender’s complete interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast in the video linked below.
