The animated comedy Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank finally hit theaters in 2022 after being in the works for a while. It’s a fun, updated take on a classic comedy, and now you can watch it on Hulu.
Hulu has added the animated film Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank to its streaming options as the month comes to a close. The movie follows a dog who trains to become a samurai to protect a village of cats. Interestingly, it was first developed under the title Blazing Samurai before being renamed Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank.
Michael Cera Leads the Voice Cast
The animated movie Paws of Fury features Michael Cera (known from Superbad) as the voice of Hank, a clumsy beagle inspired by Cleavon Little’s Sheriff Bart from Blazing Saddles. Samuel L. Jackson (of Pulp Fiction fame) voices Jimbo, a Russian blue cat modeled after Gene Wilder’s Jim the Waco Kid. Notably, Mel Brooks, the director of Blazing Saddles, also lends his voice to the film as Shogun Toshi, a British shorthair character based on his own creation, Governor William J. Le Petomane.
Inspired by Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, the animated film Paws of Fury credits Brooks alongside original Blazing Saddles writers Norman Steinberg, Andrew Bergman, Richard Pryor, and Alan Uger. Rob Minkoff, Mark Koetsier, and Chris Bailey directed the film, which also features voice performances by Ricky Gervais, George Takei, Aasif Mandvi, Gabriel Iglesias, Djimon Hounsou, and Michelle Yeoh.
Paws of Fury Is Blazing Saddles for Kids
While Paws of Fury offers a gentler, more family-appropriate version of the story, it shares many similarities with Blazing Saddles. Both films feature an outsider becoming sheriff in a prejudiced town – Blazing Saddles with a Black sheriff and Paws of Fury with a dog sheriff in a town full of cats. In both cases, the town initially rejects the sheriff, but eventually accepts them. Simply put, Paws of Fury is like a kid-friendly version of Blazing Saddles.
When Paws of Fury came out, opinions were mixed – it received a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning critics were divided. However, audiences seemed to like it more, giving it a score of 67%. While the movie earned $42.5 million at the box office, it didn’t quite make back its $45 million production cost. Still, it remains Aniventure studio’s most successful film to date. The story continued with a sequel released as a video game.
