Michael Bay And Sydney Sweeney Are Bringing Sega’s OutRun To The Big Screen – Report

After the triumph of Sonic the Hedgehog films, it appears another Sega series could make its way onto the silver screen. Reportedly, director Michael Bay and actress Sydney Sweeney are developing a movie based on Sega’s 1986 arcade racing sensation, OutRun.

As reported by Deadline, Bay will be directing the film OutRun, based on a script by Jayson Rothwell. Contrary to some speculation, Sweeney is only involved as a producer for this project, not as an actor. Sweeney, who’s currently one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood, has a packed schedule with upcoming roles such as the remake of Barbarella. Moreover, she’s been focusing on producing her own projects lately.

The OutRun arcade game, along with its sequels, primarily focuses on racing rather than story development. It’s been over a decade since the last game in the series was released, which was OutRun Online Arcade back in 2009. Interestingly, production companies have tried to bring games like Shinobi to the big screen, but only Sonic has successfully made it to the silver screen so far.

It is well-known that Universal has a knack for producing successful video game adaptations into films. For instance, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was one of the most profitable movies of 2023, earning a staggering $1.363 billion globally, and Five Nights At Freddy’s surpassed expectations with its impressive box office collection of approximately $297.1 million worldwide.

The tremendous success of a Minecraft film at the box office might encourage more video game adaptations on the silver screen. However, few movies could rival its current earnings of $717.8 million, and it’s predicted to surpass the billion-dollar mark before the end of its cinema release.
