‘Miami Vice’ Remake in the Works With ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Director Joseph Kosinski

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I, myself, will be in the director’s chair for a fresh take on “Miami Vice” under Universal Pictures!

Screenwriter Dan Gilroy, known for “Nightcrawler” and “The Bourne Legacy”, is working on a screenplay adaptation. The storyline is still under wraps, but it’s based on the 1980s TV series “Miami Vice”, where Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas portrayed undercover detectives in South Florida. This vibrant show aired on NBC for five seasons from 1984-1989. An earlier film adaptation was attempted in 2006, featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as the leads, with Michael Mann, who produced the original series, directing. Despite gaining a cult following later, the “Miami Vice” movie failed at the box office, earning $165 million against an estimated budget of $135 million.

The announcement regarding the actors has not been made yet. Besides directing, Kosinski will also produce the film through his company, Monolith. Dylan Clark, who previously collaborated with Kosinski on “Oblivion” from 2016 and the “Planet of the Apes” series directed by Matt Reeves, will additionally serve as a producer through Dylan Clark Productions. Sara Scott, Universal’s executive VP of production development, will be in charge of supervising “Miami Vice” for the studio.

Joseph Kosinski, who masterfully guided “Top Gun: Maverick” to a staggering $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office, is set to unveil his upcoming project, the Brad Pitt-starring racing drama “F1,” this coming summer. Before he jets off to Miami, Kosinski will first direct an intriguing UFO conspiracy thriller for Apple. Among his past works are “Tron: Legacy”, a real-life firefighter drama titled “Only the Brave”, and the sci-fi thriller “Spiderhead” featuring Chris Hemsworth.
