As an experienced movie enthusiast who has traversed the labyrinth of international film festivals and markets for years, I can confidently say that the 10th edition of Italy’s MIA market is undeniably a beacon of hope and innovation in the ever-evolving world of cinema. The rich tapestry of projects from 90 countries, ranging from TV series to documentaries, promises to ignite the spark of creativity and collaboration that drives our industry forward.

The tenth installment of Italy’s MIA market, specializing in international TV series, animation, movies, and documentaries, will feature approximately 60 projects hailing from 90 different nations, showcasing them to prospective collaborators.

The October 14-18 pre-Mipcom gathering will additionally offer an array of panel discussions and key speakers, providing insights that reflect the current state of the worldwide industry as it undergoes significant model shifts and places greater emphasis on collaborative productions.

The esteemed speakers for this year’s MIA panels will be unveiled towards the end of the week, according to Gaia Tridente, the market director, who spoke to EbMaster. Notable figures such as Katherine Pope from Sony Pictures Television Studios, “Ripley” producer Clayton Townsend, and Odessa Rae, a Canadian-American producer who played a significant role in creating the Oscar-winning documentary “Navalny” about the late Russian dissident, have been confirmed for these keynote speeches.

Tridente expressed her astonishment at the high number of projects MIA has received this year – a staggering 600 applications for co-production, compared to around 500 last year. This indicates that “there are numerous producers tirelessly working on fresh narratives,” she observed, also noting that “streamers are making diverse investment choices” and “producers are seeking more control over their series.” Such a situation, she added, creates an excellent foundation for securing larger budgets through innovative forms of co-production.

The exclusive event marks its 10-year milestone by persistently evolving its innovative market approach to align with dynamic industry developments. This point was emphasized in a statement issued by Chiara Sbarigia, the president of APA (Italy’s Audiovisual Producers Association).

Sbarigia mentioned that MIA, particularly APA, which he leads, has consistently aimed to bring in renowned professionals from around the world, both content creators and decision-makers, to share insights on cutting-edge trends in scripted series. This goal remains as we strive to engage more producers and showcase the Italian industry’s potential,” Sbarigia said.

As the departing president of ANICA, Italy’s film association, I am thrilled to witness MIA’s thriving state as it celebrates its decade-long anniversary. This success underscores at least two important points: firstly, that in Italy, there was a need and space for a B2B event catering to the entire audiovisual sector – an initiative that some may have doubted but one which ANICA passionately advocated for. Secondly, MIA’s decision to make Rome its home base further underscores this belief.

Tridente highlighted that over a decade, more than 100 projects unveiled at MIA have found their way to screens. He mentioned specifically “Winter Palace,” a period drama by Swiss producer Jean-Marc Fröhle, which is set to premiere on Netflix soon. Additionally, he pointed out the series “Miss Fallaci,” focusing on the 1958 U.S. journey of renowned Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci. This show marks the first Italian original for Paramount Plus and will debut at the Rome Film Festival this month.

14 TV series originating from 12 different countries will be presented at MIA, with one of them being a U.S.-Japan collaboration titled “The Aosawa Murders.” This gripping drama is adapted from Riku Onda’s book about a chilling incident in 1973 where 17 individuals were poisoned and lost their lives after consuming tainted sake and soft drinks that were gifted to the affluent Aosawa family. The production of this series is being handled by Takeo Kodera from Kadokawa Corporation and Jonathan Kier, a former president of Sierra/Affinity, who are currently based in Los Angeles at Upgrade Productions.

Hailing from the U.K., the series titled ‘Castle of the Eagles’ recounts the thrilling tale of several Allied Forces generals who manage to break out from a castle prison camp established by Benito Mussolini in Tuscany. This captivating show is written by Jeff Pope, an Oscar nominee known for ‘Philomena’, and produced by Xavier Marchand, a seasoned industry veteran with credits like ‘Spotlight’ under his belt.

One more remarkable production underway at MIA is the series titled “Bat Out of Hell,” which focuses on the life story of renowned Canadian Formula 1 driver, Gilles Villeneuve. The script has been penned by filmmakers Matt Johnson and Matthew Miller, who are known for their work on “Blackberry.” Zapruder Films, run by these talented individuals, will be responsible for its production.

At MIA, there are feature films looking for partners, such as “Fish,” a fantasy film set in Venice that was directed by Carlo S. Hintermann, whose first movie, “The Book of Vision,” premiered at the Venice Critics’ Week in 2020; and “The Place of Eternal Summer,” a coming-of-age drama set in Sicily that marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Maddalena Ravagli, who is known for her work on “Gomorrah.

Among the diverse array of animation projects showcased, you’ll find “Gainsbourg: Rue De Verneuil,” a film that delves into the life of the renowned French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. This production is a joint effort by France’s Logical Pictures and their distribution arm, The Jokers Lab.

Proposed documents encompass a set of three climate-focused initiatives: “Black Carbon-Indigenous Knowledge,” detailing discoveries by an Inuit scientist on the harm microplastics inflict in Greenland’s ice; “Inferno – Mediterranean Climate Emergency”; and “Seveso – The Italian Chernobyl,” which hails from Fandango, Italy.
