International entertainment powerhouse MFF & CO has revealed two significant productions at this year’s Series Mania Festival, broadening their collection of thought-provoking, socially aware narratives. The studio disclosed the progress on “Pegasus,” an adaptation from the highly successful nonfiction book by Laurent Richard and Sandrine Rigaud, and “Lusus,” a chilling psychological horror series stemming from a popular BBC drama podcast that received critical acclaim.
The announcement signifies a major milestone in MFF & CO’s quest to generate content with worldwide influence, as defined by their dedication to meaningful storytelling. Estela Renner, co-founder and creative head, underscored their studio’s focus on impactful narratives, saying, “At MFF & CO, we’re propelled by the force of captivating stories – tales that dare to be bold yet strike a chord deeply, igniting interest globally. Our collection of projects is carefully designed to resonate locally while maintaining a universal appeal, triggering dialogues that push cultural boundaries and promote social progress.
Developed by Amit Cohen (of “False Flag” and “No Man’s Land”) and Ron Leshem (“Euphoria,” also “No Man’s Land”), the series “Pegasus” centers around a group of investigative reporters exposing a massive global surveillance scandal tied to some of the world’s most advanced spyware. The show draws inspiration from Richard and Rigaud’s book “Pegasus: The Perilous Impact of Mobile Spyware on Privacy, Dignity, and Democracy.
According to Miura Kite, President of Global Content at MFF & CO, the dynamic duo of Amit Cohen and Ron Leshem are ideally suited to breathe life into this extraordinary tale. Their skill in crafting suspenseful narratives and delving into complex moral quandaries promises a gripping, intellectually stimulating storyline where the pursuit of truth carries a heavy price.
The production of this project is overseen by Nathalie Perus and Thomas Anargyros from Atlantique Productions (a Mediawan company), as well as Miura Kite and Estela Renner from MFF & CO. Additionally, Maria Feldman represents Masha Productions in the executive production team.
Instead of the spy-focused “Pegasus,” the series “Lusus” delves into the blend of fear and everyday life. It opens in a deserted dentist’s office, where our heroine Jen encounters a puzzling door that materializes people’s deepest fears into real-life terrors, causing turmoil across the city. The only method to end this nightmare is for Jen to face her personal anxieties and gather an unconventional team of companions.
The work titled “Lusus,” authored by Rachel C. Zisser and Samantha Newton, explores contemporary worries such as fear of missing out (FOMO), eco-anxiety, and hypochondria. According to Kite, with ‘Lusus,’ MFF & CO is pioneering a fresh genre path, inviting viewers into an engaging realm where our most profound fears become tangible. “We are thrilled to partner with Rachel Zisser and Samantha Newton,” Kite added, “their knack for merging psychological horror with compelling human narratives makes them the perfect creative duo for this daring and innovative series.
The announcement comes after MFF & CO’s latest creation, “Fail-Safe,” a movie directed by Joe Berlinger (“Paradise Lost” and “Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey”). Furthermore, the company is working on “Esperanza,” a series helmed by Fernando Meirelles (“City of God” and “The Two Popes”), which focuses on a team of rebels seeking to build a more ideal world.
MFF & Co. stemmed from the global growth of Maria Farinha Filmes, a prominent impact entertainment company in Latin America, known for its award-winning productions such as Aruanas series and “The Beginning of Life” documentary franchise, which sparked a global wave in cinemas and streaming platforms.
