Mexico’s Eugenio Derbez Starring in First Dramatic Series Role in Prime Video’s ‘El Juicio’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a huge fan of Mexican cinema and television, I am thrilled to see Eugenio Derbez taking on his first dramatic lead role in a series, “El Juicio,” on Prime Video. Derbez is best known for his comedic performances in films like “Instructions Not Included,” “How to Be a Latin Lover,” and “Overboard.” However, he has shown his versatility as an actor with his role in the Sundance audience award-winning film “Radical.”

Mexican actor-director-producer Eugenio Derbez, famously recognized for his humorous roles in movies like “Instructions Not Included,” “How to Be a Latin Lover,” and “Overboard,” is making his first significant foray into drama as the leading star of Amazon Prime Video’s series, “El Juicio.”

In the eight-part series titled “El Juicio,” or “The Trial” in English, the actors Pedro Alonso from “Money Heist,” Karla Gaytán of “El amor invencible,” and Iker Sánchez Solano of “Bardo” join forces. This gripping show is based on a true crime case and centers around a teenage girl and her father. After she is victimized by the privileged son of a prosperous businessman, they embark on a challenging journey for justice in a flawed legal system. Their struggle intensifies when they face an adversary who will stop at nothing to shield his son from accountability.

In his acting career, Derbez earned his initial leading role in the acclaimed film “Radical,” which centers around an unconventional teacher who brings about surprising success in a rural school through innovative methods.

Throughout my entire professional journey, I’ve strived to push my boundaries, and taking on the role in “El Juicio” has presented me with one of the most demanding acting tasks yet. Delving into terrifying scenarios and emotions led me to discover new heights as an actor. Derbez, who is also the star of AppleTV+’s “Acapulco,” shared this sentiment.

“Bringing to life on screen the story of a father’s relentless pursuit of justice for his daughter comes with great complexity and heartbreak,” he remarked. “This challenging project is made possible through the guidance of a brilliant showrunner and writer like Daniel Krauze, the expertise of skilled directors such as Roberto Sneider, Belén Macías, and Jorge Michel Grau, the commitment of an exceptionally talented actor like Pedro Alonso, and the collective effort of a remarkable cast.”

After the challenging yet enriching past two and a half years, I had made up my mind not to act in any films in 2024… that is until I came across the script for “El Juicio.” Impressed by it, Alonso, who stars in the “Money Heist” spin-off “Berlin,” reconsidered his decision.

Based on my own experiences and observations, I deeply resonate with the sentiments expressed by the speaker regarding Daniel Krauze’s storytelling. As someone who has delved into intricate and complex issues in my personal and professional life, I appreciate the nuance and depth that Krauze brings to his narratives.

“Filmed in Puebla and Mexico City, the Amazon MGM Studios production ‘El Juicio’ is a collaboration between 3Pas Studios and Visceral, a Mexico City production company, as well as Reclaim Entertainment Ventures, a transmedia production company.”

“According to Alonso Aguilar, head of Mexican original productions at Amazon MGM Studios, the show tackles deeply moving, intricate, and pressing issues. To bring these topics to life authentically and compassionately, we drew on the fearless vision and expertise of our talented cast and crew.”

As a passionate binge-watcher who’s always on the lookout for new and exciting series to indulge in, I’m absolutely thrilled to share some fantastic news with fellow fans! This upcoming series will be available exclusively on Prime Video across the globe. And get this – it’s not just any ordinary production; renowned actors like Eugenio Derbez, Gael Odell, Daniel Arenas, and León Krauze are part of the project!
