Mexico’s Apapacho Films Boards LGBTQ+ Malaga Project ‘Her Ocean’ (EXCLUSIVE)

The well-known Mexican film production company, Apapacho Films, has now joined forces with the much-awaited movie titled “Her Ocean” (“El Mar la Mar”), directed by Julián Amaru Estrada. This deeply moving coming-of-age story delves into topics of identity, family, and the intricacies of Latin American culture, placing a particular focus on the hardships faced by LGBTQ+ youth within this society.

In ‘Her Ocean,’ we follow Ray, a young fisherman from Peru who is also gay, as he embarks on a personal quest to locate his missing mother in the dense Amazonian rainforest. He carries with him only a picture of her taken in Iquitos at a local bar. As Ray delves deeper into the unknown, he grapples with the reasons behind his search and the unforgiving circumstances of his own existence. This poignant narrative, combined with breathtaking visuals, has the potential to captivate audiences worldwide due to its raw authenticity and powerful emotional impact.

The movie set to be showcased at the Malaga Festival’s MAFIZ co-production industry event is a joint production among Final Abierto (Peru), Solita Films (Spain) and most recently, Apapacho Films (Mexico). Alongside directing, Amaru collaborates with Christopher Vazquez on the screenplay.

In the global landscape we find ourselves today, collaborative film productions among Latin American nations hold greater significance than ever. These partnerships serve not only to bolster our regional industry, but also to showcase unique and varied stories that contrast with dominant perspectives and industries.

The movie project has attracted considerable interest and recognition, having won notable awards like Peru’s National Production Fund and the Programa Ibermedia Co-development Fund in 2024. Furthermore, this project was honored by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP), who bestowed upon it the Latino Lens Workshop prize.

At this stage, “Her Ocean” is planned for filming in February and March of the coming year.

Red Aura stated that Apapacho expressed interest in “Her Ocean” not just because of its distinctive storyline but also due to its captivating, dream-like visual style. In Rojo Aura’s words, “The tale of Ray’s maturation process, set against the backdrop of Latin America’s frequently traditional perspectives on LGBTQ+ matters, is crucial and imperative.” He added that this film resonates with the universal yearning for acceptance and underscores the significance of sharing diverse, genuine narratives.

Producer María Paz Barragan, who is also directing “Tenants,” added that “‘Her Ocean’ promises to be a visually captivating, lively, and dreamy film. The heartfelt LGBTQ+ coming-of-age story of ‘Ray’ is compelling and timely, particularly when discussing the unique culture of Latin America, which remains quite conservative and marginalizes minorities, much like the townspeople do to Ray.
