‘Mewing’ creator John Mew dead at 96-years-old

96-year-old Professor John Mew, renowned British orthodontist and creator of the popular facial reshaping method called “mewing,” has sadly passed away.

I was saddened to learn that Mew, a trailblazer and relentless crusader for improved health, had passed away according to Orthotropics.com. In 2025, he departed this world peacefully after a lifetime dedicated to challenging the fundamentals of contemporary orthodontics.

Initially, Mew studied dentistry at University College London and started off as a maxillofacial surgeon in his professional life. However, he later shifted his focus to orthodontics. He soon grew critical of traditional methods that primarily focused on straightening teeth mechanically without considering the underlying causes of facial development problems.

In response, he created the Biobloc Orthotropics method, which focused on proper posture, breathing, and early treatment to help naturally shape a child’s facial growth by guiding its development.

Despite facing intense criticism and even losing his dental license from the orthodontic community, Mew persisted in sharing his ideas through teaching and publication. This relentless pursuit sparked a devoted following who were inspired by his work, setting the stage for a larger movement challenging conventional dental practices.

Mew’s thoughts gained worldwide attention via the trend known as “mewing,” a social media sensation that took off. This practice, involving keeping your tongue in an appropriate position at the roof of your mouth, has garnered over 30 billion views on TikTok and continues to stir discussions about its validity and scientific basis.

Apart from his career in orthodontics, Mew lived an eclectic life. He served as a motorcycle messenger during World War II, tried his hand at Formula 1 racing, was a skilled downhill skier, participated in sailing for the America’s Cup, conducted anthropological studies, and authored books. Additionally, he constructed a castle and raised a family, among them his son, Dr. Mike Mew, who carries on his father’s legacy today.
