Metro Developer Explains Confusing Studio Schism Ahead Of Franchise’s 15th Anniversary

4A Games and 4A Games Ukraine were once linked, but they are no longer part of the same organization according to recent clarifications from 4A Games. In a recent update, 4A Games stated that while most of its employees continue to work in Ukraine, the other studio previously known as 4A Games Ukraine (now renamed Reburn) is now an entirely independent entity.

In the recent update, it’s clarified that the founding members of the studio established 4A Games Limited in 2014 to set up a new headquarters in Malta with around 50 team members. When Metro Exodus was launched in 2019, 4A Games Limited subsequently opened another studio in Kyiv and recruited approximately 50 employees from their pre-existing office, 4A Games Ukraine. This division then separated to become an independent studio no longer linked to 4A or the Metro series, now known as Reburn.

The mix-up between this name and the studio originates from Reburn’s recent unveiling of their new venture, La Quimera. This project is characterized as a first-person shooter with an emphasis on storytelling, world construction, and character development. The game’s universe and narrative have been conceived by Nicolas Winding Refn, renowned for his work in Drive and The Neon Demon, and it derives inspiration from Latin American folklore.

4A Games was established in the year 2006, with team members hailing from the Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl studio, GSC Game World, originally. They have gained notoriety primarily for their work on the Metro series, which is inspired by a collection of novels penned by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky.
