Metallica copyright strikes U.S. government after Pentagon used their song for training

The U.S. Department of Defense was compelled to take down and re-post a video showcasing a drone demo, as Metallica asked for its removal because they didn’t have the right to use their song “Enter Sandman” in it.

Back in the early ’90s, I remember when Metallica dropped their iconic song, which is famously known as a part of “The Black Album.” This legendary track was first unleashed to the world on their fifth studio masterpiece, an album that’s often referred to by fans like me as simply “The Black Album.

Originally, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s posted video on X/Twitter featured Metallica’s song “Enter Sandman”, but according to Rolling Stone, there was no authorization given for its use.

Pentagon forced to pull video featuring Metallica song

An official representative from the Pentagon clarified the motives behind taking down and re-posting the video, as reported by The Independent.

This afternoon, individuals from X contacted the Department of Defense concerning a video shared on our social media platform featuring the song ‘Enter Sandman’ by Metallica. They requested that the video be deleted due to copyright issues related to the track. We have complied with their request, fixed any necessary errors, and re-posted the revised video on our page.

Metallica is widely recognized for taking a firm stand against the misuse of their music. A notable instance is their lawsuit against Napster in 2000, and they have persistently advocated for proper usage of their tunes in various forms of media.

In 2022, one of the band’s legendary songs, Master of Puppets, experienced a resurgence in popularity when it was featured in Season 4 of Netflix’s Stranger Things. The band expressed their excitement by stating they were “extremely thrilled” to see the track used on the show.
