Metal Gear Solid movie gets new directors after nearly a decade in development hell

The creators of a popular horror movie from last year have signed on to make a Metal Gear Solid movie.

Okay, so Sony just made a deal with the directors of the new Final Destination movie, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein. Apparently, Final Destination: Bloodlines was a huge success – it made over $317 million worldwide with a $50 million budget, and people actually liked it more than any other movie in the series! Because of that, Sony signed them to a deal where they get first dibs on anything these guys want to direct across all of their movie labels.

It was perfect timing for these two filmmakers, who first connected as rivals on Steven Spielberg’s reality show ‘On the Lot’ 17 years ago.

Metal Gear Solid movie gets new directors at Sony

Wonderlab, the new production company founded by Lipovsky and Stein, has signed a deal to develop movies for them to direct and also to produce original films with other directors.

The directors will be helming Sony Columbia’s movie adaptation of the video game Metal Gear Solid, with Avi and Ari Arad producing. This builds on their existing work with Sony, as they’re also creating an animated Venom movie for Sony Pictures Animation and developing a new science fiction film called The Earthling for Columbia.

Lipovsky and Stein described Metal Gear Solid as a truly innovative and cinematic game that changed the video game landscape forever. They expressed their excitement and privilege in adapting Hideo Kojima’s famous characters and captivating world, according to a statement given to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sony isn’t just now thinking about a Metal Gear Solid movie. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts worked on a version of the film for years, but it never actually got made. So, while the recent announcement makes it seem straightforward, bringing Kojima’s stealth game series to the big screen has been a challenging process with a long history.

Lipovsky and Stein are currently working on multiple projects at different studios. These include a new Gremlins movie for Warner Bros., a project called Long Lost with Amblin and Universal, and The Traveler at Paramount.
