The classic stealth-action game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, often regarded as the best in the series, is set to be updated for contemporary gaming with the release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. This upcoming remake was initially unveiled at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase. Remaining true to its PS2 roots, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater incorporates the jungle survival gameplay and intricate political narrative that made the original a hit, along with emotionally charged betrayals and the origin story of Naked Snake, which reveals how he became known as Big Boss.
By examining official records, social media posts, and data from Konami, we’ve successfully gathered preliminary insights into the ongoing development of a remake of the Snake Eater game.

Konami characterizes this revamp of Metal Gear Solid 3 as offering unmatched visuals, engaging stealth gameplay, and captivating audio, all while immersing players back into the gripping narrative set within the universe of Metal Gear.

In essence, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater on the newer platform is designed to largely preserve its classic gameplay, but also introduces some improvements and user-friendly modifications.
Initially, players will have two options: either experience the game using contemporary controls in a third-person action style or select an arrangement similar to the original, offering a top-down perspective typical of MGS games. Moreover, players can swiftly switch their active camouflage with a quick-select button for added flexibility.
Moving to Unreal Engine 5 provides Konami with an opportunity to update the animation style of Snake Eater, which is a key aspect of their modernization process on a technical level.
As an enthusiast, I initially envisioned revamping just the graphics for this series to match contemporary standards. However, I soon realized that such an update alone wouldn’t deliver the satisfying gaming experience we aimed for. Consequently, we ended up redesigning almost all animations and explored methods to refresh every aspect of the game. Furthermore, we took the opportunity to fully actualize elements that were once constrained by technical limitations during the original creation.
For the remake, the original voiceovers from Snake Eater on PS2 were preserved, yet fresh dialogue was also recorded to add a new dimension.
In a 2024 interview, Okamura stated, “We’re keeping the original voiceovers intact, but certain lines where characters explain controls no longer fit, so we had the original actors re-record just those sections. Also, back then, due to limitations, we had to compress the voice acting significantly. Now, we have more flexibility, allowing us to present the performances in higher quality without compromising on format or compression.
What does Metal Gear Solid Delta mean?
Are you perplexed by the Greek symbol used in the Metal Gear remake project? The official Twitter account clarified that they chose the Delta symbol due to its relevance to the project’s concept. In essence, Delta signifies “change” or “difference”, but it doesn’t alter the existing structure.
Is Hideo Kojima involved in Metal Gear Solid Delta?
Hideo Kojima, the main creator of Metal Gear Solid 3, and his regular art partner, Yoji Shinkawa, who played a significant role in shaping the distinctive style of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, are not participating in the making of Delta, as confirmed by Konami.
A representative from Konami stated that they are not directly participating in the project. Yet, the development team is dedicated to producing an exceptional remake of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection and ensuring it’s compatible with various platforms globally. This means more gamers worldwide can enjoy the game on multiple systems.
Following the separation between Kojima and Konami during the production of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Konami started to disassociate itself and the series from Kojima. This was evident when they prevented him from personally accepting an award for The Phantom Pain at The Game Awards in 2015.
One noteworthy aspect of the trailer is its abundant nods to Snake Eater. At first glance, it appears reminiscent of a BBC documentary exploring food chains, but upon closer inspection, you’ll spot references like the Shagohod, The End’s loyal companion, and even a dialogue snippet about colossal ants in a codec conversation.
