Metal Gear Solid 5’s Official Strategy Guide Is Still Available 10 Years Later

If you’re enjoying the new Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remake, you might also be interested in a classic piece of Metal Gear memorabilia. The official strategy guide for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is still available on Amazon, and it’s currently on sale for $19.70 – down from its original price of $25.

This is official merchandise for the last game in the Metal Gear series. If you haven’t played it yet, you can also get both *The Phantom Pain* and its earlier chapter, *Ground Zeroes*, as part of the *Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience* for only $23 on PlayStation or PC.

Right now, everyone’s talking about Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater! Our review gave it a fantastic 9/10, praising how well it updates a classic PS2 game for today’s players. If you’re thinking of buying it, the Tactical Edition is available for $68 (originally $70) at several online stores. It’s the standard physical copy of the game, but comes with some bonus downloadable content. PC gamers can get it on Steam for even less – just $52.38 (down from $70) at Fanatical. For dedicated fans, there’s a $200 Collector’s Edition still available on Amazon. This includes the game, extra DLC, and cool collectibles like a diorama of Snake in the forest, embroidered patches, and a special metal game case.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Deals

If you’re familiar with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain or Metal Gear Solid Delta and are interested in playing the older games, the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 is a great place to start.

This bundle features the classic Metal Gear Solid games, including Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD. It also includes the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake from the MSX platform, plus animated graphic novels based on Metal Gear Solid. You can buy the physical copy for $30 (originally $60) on Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. A digital version is available on consoles and PC, and the Steam version is currently $45 (originally $60) at Fanatical.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1

  • Switch — $30 ($60)
  • Xbox — $30 ($60)
  • PS5 — $30 ($60)
  • Steam (via Fanatical) — $45 ($60)

The Master Collection includes most of the core Metal Gear games, but it doesn’t have everything. Notably missing are titles like Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, as well as the Ground Zeroes chapter and various spin-off games such as Metal Gear: Survive and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Konami may release these remaining games in a future Master Collection or as remakes like the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Δ, but they haven’t announced any specific plans for that yet.

It’s tough to play some of the older Metal Gear Solid games right now. Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker, originally for PS3 and PSP, aren’t available on today’s consoles or computers. However, you *can* get the newest main game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, along with the Ground Zeroes prologue and all its downloadable content in the Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience. It’s available for $23 on PS4 or on PC through Fanatical. Keep in mind that starting with MGSV means you’ll miss some story details from the earlier games, but many fans agree it has the best gameplay in the series, making it a great choice if you enjoyed Delta or the Master Collection and want more tactical espionage action.

The main Metal Gear series follows the complex story of Big Boss, his cloned son Solid Snake, and a secretive group called The Patriots. Over the years, there have also been several spin-off games. Some, like Metal Gear: Survive, aren’t considered official parts of the story, while others, like Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, have a loose connection. However, 2013’s Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, developed by Platinum Games, is officially part of the Metal Gear timeline. Set towards the end of the series, it puts players back in control of Raiden, the cyborg ninja from Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4. Unlike most Metal Gear games which focus on stealth, Rising is an action-packed character-focused game. It’s popular with fans and currently available on PC for $23 (originally $30) through Fanatical.

If you’re a huge Metal Gear Solid fan like me and want to experience the stories in a new way, you should definitely check out the official novels for the first two games! They basically retell everything that happens in Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. What’s cool is they were written by Raymond Benson, the same guy who’s written a bunch of official James Bond novels, so you know he understands how to tell a good spy story.

Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear, also released a novel adaptation of his game, Death Stranding, in two parts. While Death Stranding shares some design and world-building similarities with Metal Gear, it’s more focused on science fiction themes. If you enjoy Kojima’s work and are looking for more to explore, these novels are worth reading. You can find both volumes as paperback or Kindle books on Amazon.

Hideo Kojima also published a nonfiction book called *The Creative Gene* in 2021. It’s a collection of his personal stories and thoughts on topics like creativity, game development, and art. While it doesn’t reveal any new details about the *Metal Gear* story, it does offer a look into how he thinks and important moments from his life. You can find the paperback version on Amazon for $17.87, down from $23.
