Menendez Family Steps Up Pressure at Press Conference, Asking Los Angeles D.A. to Free Brothers

As a movie buff with a keen interest in true crime narratives, I’ve followed the Menendez brothers’ case since its sensational debut in the ’90s. The recent developments have certainly piqued my curiosity once again.

As a movie critic, I find myself reflecting on a real-life drama that has captivated audiences for decades – the Menendez brothers’ case. Over three decades ago, Lyle and Erik were convicted of brutally murdering their own parents. On Wednesday, the Menendez family assembled to appeal to District Attorney George Gascón, urging him to intervene in the brothers’ behalf. Having served 34 years behind bars, they are seeking a chance at freedom.

The legal team defending the siblings maintains that recently discovered proof indicates they were victims of sexual abuse at the hands of their father, Jose Menendez.

Anamaria Baralt, a female relative, contended that they had been “victims of a society that wasn’t yet prepared to hear them out.

I believe Lyle and Erik need time to mend, and so does our family alongside them,” I expressed.

Gascón is examining fresh evidence, such as a letter penned by Erik Menendez to one of his cousins prior to the murders, where he discusses his father’s alleged abuse.

Roy Rossello, who was once part of the boy band Menudo, recently claimed that Jose Menendez sexually assaulted him when he was around 13 or 14 years old. The defense contends that this fresh evidence could have influenced the trial’s outcome, resulting in a manslaughter verdict instead of a conviction for first-degree murder.

Due to the popular Netflix documentary series “Monsters,” the case has experienced a resurgence of attention, becoming the most-viewed show on the platform during its initial fortnight of airing last month.

The Menendez family has strongly criticized the series, labeling it as “a prejudiced, distasteful, outdated, serial drama that is filled with untruths and blatant lies, and intentionally overlooks the latest evidence supporting their innocence.

Ryan Murphy, the co-creator, defended the show, saying it presented multiple points of view.

Mark Geragos, representing the brothers, contended that societal understanding towards the issue of male sexual abuse has significantly changed over the past three decades. He believes that the Netflix show gained notoriety due to its depiction of such sensitive matters in a negative light.

Geragos remarked, “It was incredibly exaggerated.” He explained that the extreme reaction or counteraction, also known as the backlash, drew significant attention to it.

In August 1989, Jose and Kitty Menendez met their end through gunshots. During the 1980s, Jose held a prominent position as an executive at RCA Records.

Approximately 100 journalists flocked to the outdoor patio of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center for the press conference, while many more spectators gathered on the adjacent sidewalk to observe.

Following the news conference, the relatives walked over to the Courthouse, where they planned to discuss their thoughts on the case with the district attorneys. This meeting was scheduled to take place afterwards.

The court has scheduled a hearing on November 29 to review the defense’s petition. District Attorney Gascón, who faces re-election next month and currently lags significantly behind in the polls, has yet to express his stance on the defense’s request, but he has hinted that he is giving the new evidence careful consideration.

At a recent press briefing, he stated that the details shared haven’t been verified yet. He emphasized that it’s our responsibility, both morally and ethically, to scrutinize the information given and reach a conclusion after considering a re-sentencing perspective.

During a recent debate, Nathan Hochman, Gascón’s adversary, contended that Gascón manipulated the case to divert focus from his shortcomings as an officeholder, instead of addressing the matter directly. However, the family has consistently maintained that this topic surpasses the confines of the political race.

“I know there is an election,” Baralt said. “For us, this is not political.”

The legal team is attempting to either overturn the convictions (which might lead to a fresh trial) or request revised sentences for the brothers. If granted by a judge, both scenarios could potentially lead to their freedom.

Geragos expressed his expectation that the brothers would return home in time for Thanksgiving. Originally, Rosie O’Donnell was anticipated to attend the press conference; however, she was unable to do so because of scheduling conflicts.
