Memecoins, with no inherent utility beyond speculative trading, initially attracted retail investors with the promise of a fair trading field. However, recent scandals, such as the LIBRA token, have revealed that insiders dominate the market.

Carter highlights the LIBRA coin launch, opening at a $1 billion market cap and briefly spiking to $4 billion, as an example of this unfairness.

Despite the recent trading frenzy, Carter believes that the era of memecoins is kaput. However, he acknowledges that new token launches and winners will still emerge.

As trust in memecoins dwindles, Carter anticipates regulatory action against insider trading in the sector. He also predicts that blockchain transaction histories will lead to future law enforcement actions.

The Path to Maturity

Carter envisions a market shift towards more sustainable and equitable token launches.

As high pre-launch valuations become less appealing, projects are adjusting by offering lower initial valuations to attract buyers. Platforms like Echo, enforcing accreditation and KYC, will likely gain popularity for prelaunch fundraising.

Carter also expects increased legitimacy in DeFi tokens, with the SEC crafting clearer rules for token issuance. He foresees a future where tokens can openly generate and return capital to users.

“The trade of the next few years is simply assessing the fundamentals of these tokens and buying those that trade at reasonable valuations relative to their real or implied cashflows,” Carter said.

While some traders may mourn the end of the memecoin gold rush, Carter argues that the market is merely maturing. “Ridding ourselves of the cancerous memecoin sector—which was in hindsight tremendously unfair—is a good development overall,” he wrote.
