Mel Gibson’s ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ Set at Lionsgate

Mel Gibson, along with his partner Bruce Davey, and their production company Icon Productions, have selected Lionsgate as the collaborative studio for “The Resurrection of Christ,” which is a sequel to their groundbreaking 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ.

Prior to the previous year, “The Passion” held the title for the highest-earning R-rated movie domestically. It started strong with an opening weekend of $83 million, eventually accumulating over $370 million in North American cinemas and surpassing $610 million worldwide. All this was achieved on a production budget of just $30 million.

The agreement extends Gibson’s prolonged partnership with Lionsgate, a company he filmed his last two movies with – the Academy-nominated “Hacksaw Ridge” and the Mark Wahlberg starrer “Flight Risk”. Similarly, they distribute the Icon library, which encompasses films like The Passion of the Christ.

Many people worldwide eagerly await ‘The Resurrection of Christ’, which is considered the most significant theatrical production in a long time. This film promises to be an amazing and grand spectacle that will leave viewers around the world speechless,” stated Adam Fogelson, head of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “Mel is a brilliant director, and this project holds deep personal significance for him, making it an ideal platform to display his filmmaking skills at their best. My association with Mel and Bruce spans over three decades, and I am excited to collaborate with them once more on this historical event that will captivate audiences.

For a while now, Lionsgate’s fearless, creative mindset and their knack for getting things done have been an inspiration to me. I couldn’t imagine a more suitable distributor for ‘The Resurrection of the Christ,'” said Gibson. “I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Adam and his crew on multiple occasions in recent years. I know that their intelligence, enthusiasm, and drive are qualities they bring to every project, and I trust that they will pour all of this into the distribution of this film.

In this transaction, Lauren Bixby, John Biondo, and Grace Clements represented the studio’s interests, while Bruce Davey and Vicki Christianson from Icon, Jim Osborne from IAG, and attorney Joel VanderKloot handled things for the filmmakers.
